The quality of the air supply directly affects the output, efficiency and life of the engine. The requirement of the induction system must therefore be to supply the engine with clean dry air close to ambient temperature conditions. Oil bath or dry (paper element) filters are adequate for low dust concentration conditions. However, as the dust burden of the air increases, centrifugal pre-cleaners become... [Pg.196]

A pressurized lubrication system using an engine-mounted pump is the choice of most manufacturers. A sump in the crankcase or an external drain tank together with filters and coolers complete the system. The choice of oil should be consistent with the manufacturer s recommendation, and should only be varied if the engine is to be operated in unusual or extreme conditions. [Pg.198]

Cleaning of oil in service may be accomplished quite simply or with relatively complex units, depending on the application and the design of the system. Thus for some operations it is enough to remove particles of ferrous metal from the oil with a magnetic system. In a closed circulatory system, such as that of a steam turbine, the nature of the solids and other contaminants is far more complex, and the treatment has therefore to be more elaborate. In an internal-combustion engine, both air and fuel are filtered as well as crankcase oil. [Pg.881]

If deposits found on filters, pump parts, and engine systems contain high levels of zinc, calcium, phosphorus, and sulfur, the possible source of the contamination is lubricating oil. These elements are part of the composition of the engine oil additive package. The elements and the compounds in which they can be found are listed in TABLE 4-11. [Pg.108]

Wear metal analysis. ASTM D4951 and ASTM D5185 (ICP-AES). A wide variety of different metals occur in engine oil. The metal accumulation is a consequence of wear, corrosion, and from the air induction system. The wear metal values change with the maker and model of the equipment and with the type of service, including working environment, drain interval and filter change... [Pg.223]

Hot-gas filtration can reduce the ash content of the oil to less than 0.01% and the alkali content to less than 10 ppm - much lower than reported for biomass oils produced in systems using only cyclones. Diesel engine tests performed on crude and on hot-filtered oil showed a substantial increase in burning rate and a lower ignition delay for the latter, due to the lower average molecular weight for the filtered oil (36). Hot gas filtration has not yet been demonstrated over a long-term process operation. Pyrolysis oils are not miscible with hydrocarbon fuels but with the aid of surfactants they can be emulsified with diesel oil. [Pg.991]

It has always been a problem that standard disc electrodes are not manufactured with consistent porosities, which affects the c ture efficiency of the particles. This variability hurts rq>eatability and thus makes data trends, on which used oil analysis maintenance recommendations are based, more difficult to establish. Furthermore, long sample preparation times for hi y sooted sanq>les fium diesel engines were not practical for scxne laboratories. These fectors led to a new system that addressed these concerns and offered additional improvements. The updated and improved system is known as automated rotrode filter spectroscopy (A-RFS) (Fig. 3). It greatly improved rqieatability through the use of controlled electrodes, automation, and a vacuum/ptessure pump to reduce sample preparation times. [Pg.74]

The most common application of vegetable oil-modified polyamides is in the surface coatings and paints industry. The dimer acids of tall and soybean oils and amines are used to modify the flow behaviour of paints. This thixotropic flow prevents setting and sagging, enables easy application and improves surface appearance. Vegetable oil-based nylons are used as engineering polymers in the automotive and transport industry for fuel lines. Products are also used for the extruded and moulded components of fuel systems such as filler necks, gas tanks, reservoir modules, filters, fuel rails and vapour recovery systems. Nylon 11 is also used in power coatings to coat metals that must withstand abrasion, impact and corrosion. [Pg.222]

Zinc dialkyldithiophosphates (ZnDTPs) have been used as antioxidants, corrosion inhibitors and anti-wear agents in engine oil formulations for decades [1-3]. This class of additives contains a large amount of phosphorus, sulfur and zinc, which can lead to a loss of emission-control catalyst effectiveness and block filters within the exhaust gas after-treatment system [4]. [Pg.382]

PMB services include all PM A items, and also include an oil and filter change, as well as more in-depth checks of the engine and drivefine. A PM B in many cases also includes a download of any onboard computer diagnostics, and action on any trouble codes or problems reported by the diagnostic system (if apphcable). [Pg.625]

Nonwoven filter media employed for filtering fuel and oil must demonstrate good chemical and temperature resistance. The filtration system is also constantly subjected to a great deal of vibration and shock, so the media must withstand extreme operating conditions. And since the filter media represent the last line of defence for engines against contaminant-related wear and tear, the performance of the nonwoven must, in addition, be consistent and predictable during the service cycle. [Pg.262]
