As was indicated in the previous section, the concentration of iron in the mixed wastewaters ranged from 5980 to 6100 mg/L its pH was 0.7 and zinc concentration was 15 pg/L. Searching patents is an art in itself and cannot be discussed in detail here. Appropriate patent classes are usually searched at the Patent Office in Washington. Chemical Abstracts covers some patents. Searchers may consult the Uniterm Index of Chemical Patents and other aids. They will have difficulty with the Annual Patent Index of the Official Gazette of the 17. S. Patent Office, because the entries are listed by title and inventors. As titles do not correspond to subjects, this index is not very useful. 

Patent specifications are published in a form similar to ours and the abstracts are published in the Bulletin of Inventions, ByuUleten Izobretenii, which is roughly comparable to the Official Gazette, United States Patent Office (2). 

Since July 1952, the Official Gazette of the U. S. Patent Office has listed each week s patents in three groups—general and mechanical, chemical, and electrical. In ten recent weeks (September to November 1960) patents in the chemical group ranged from 18 to 26% of the total, averaging 20%. 

The United States Patent Oflfice classifies its patents into some 350 main classes, each of which is divided into many subclasses. There are now about 45,000 of these subclasses. Titles of the classes and subclasses are listed in the "Manual of Classification of Patents (54). Revision of this classification is a continuous process. As classes are revised and new definitions for them are written, these are pubhshed first in the Official Gazette of the U. S. Patent Office and later in the Classification Bulletin issued at intervals by the Patent Office. 

The patent phase of the work is handled somewhat differently but in an equally efficient manner. The head of the Patent Section of Gulf Research Development Co. examines each copy of the Official Gazette of the United States Patent Office for patents of interest. He then obtains copies of the patents, roughly classifies them, and sends them to qualified persons at the research laboratories for abstracting. Since each man receives only patents which directly pertain to his specialty, the abstracting involves a minimum of mental effort—hence time. The patents, accompanied by copies of the abstracts, are then sent to Mellon Institute for classification and filing in a manner analogous to the way in which the literature is handled. 

Although we actually have only the Official Gazette of the U. S. Patent Officey we are still able to help many readers seeking patent information because we are subscribers to the Uniterm Index to Chemical Patents.

Abandoned patent -applications may also be a source of unpubhshed data. Some of them are available for inspection, or photostat copies may be obtained. These may be located through digests published in the Official Gazette of the United States Patent Ojffice, By order of that office, dated January 25, 1949 (7), abstracts of abandoned patents are published by request of the applicant or owner.
