Off-the-road

Silica. The main uses of siUca are in the treads of off-the-road tines for improved chunking and tear resistance and as a component of the bonding system for brass and 2inc-plated steel cord. These are commonly used in radial passenger and tmck tire belt skim stock. In addition the body pHes of steel radial tmck tires, hoses and belts, and footwear use significant volumes of siUca as a reinforcing filler. [Pg.245]

In tires, carbon black is important because of the high flex fatigue and tear strength requirements of this product. Poor dispersion can result in premature cracking in both treads and sidewalls. In off-the-road tires poor dispersion results in excessive chip/chunk causing a significant loss in treadwear in addition to tread lug cracking which can lead to loss of an entire lug (radial tread bar). [Pg.250]

Most of these methods allow essential maintenance and repairs to be carried out under workshop conditions without taking the vehicle off the road, providing a spare unit is available. A dominant feature of this market has become the wide availability of spares and service wherever such vehicles may go. [Pg.160]

Joseph Stone was a long-haul truck driver, age twenty-two, who lived off-the-road in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. His sleeper-truck was a Freightliner which pulled into Avondale Mills too late for unloading on January 5, 2005. Stone, also known as Rolling Stone, his CB radio name, drove for J.W. Express located in Deauville, Quebec. He called his girlfriend at home in Quebec to tell her he would be held up for the night, and then went to bed in his truck. Runaway chlorine gas killed Joseph Stone by inhalation while he slept on Leitner Street in Graniteville, and he may never have known what killed him. [Pg.39]

On the night of December 14, 1987, petitioner Deborah Kitchen was shot by her ex-boyfriend, Thomas Knapp, and rendered a permanent quadriplegic, shortly after Knapp purchased a. 22 caliber bolt-action rifle from a local K-Mart retail store. Knapp testified that he had consumed a fifth of whiskey and a case of beer beginning that morning and up until he left a local bar around 8 30 P.M. Knapp drove from the bar to a local K-Mart store where he purchased a rifle and a box of bullets. He returned to the bar and, after observing Kitchen leave in an automobile with friends, follmved in his truck. He subsequently rammed their car, forcing it off the road, and shot Kitchen at the base of her neck. [Pg.81]

A large proportion of the circa 3.7 x 106 t/yr of natural mbber used in tires is consumed in tmck tires, off-the-road tires, and aircraft tires, all of which demand a low heat buildup performance. The retreading of tmck tires was also the province of natural mbber until the precured process was developed. Prior to the advent of this technique, the tack of natural mbber was essential for the unvulcanized mbber to adhere onto the buffed carcass, and the thickness of the shoulder region was such that the low heat buildup of natural mbber was essential to ensure that no failure occurred in service. With the precured tread process neither of these attributes were necessary and, synthetic mbber, which was and continues to be used, was found to give particularly good wear performance under low severity conditions, especially in the United States. However, work (56) has shown that natural mbber-based formulations can be developed which give a similar order of wear performance to the all-synthetic mbber tread, but with the additional benefit of lower rolling resistance, and hence better fuel economy. [Pg.272]

The car swerved marginally aside and bounced off the road into the woods. It bumped and thudded a short distance down the uneven slope, then smashed noisily into a sturdy tree that reeled from the impact. The car s bonnet crumpled like a boxer s nose. Dazed, the goddess rode over to help the driver. [Pg.50]

In any reaction there are many collisions that provide too little energy for us to reach the top of the hill. These collisions are fruitless, and we slide back to our original valley. Many collisions provide sufficient energy, but take place when the molecules areTmproperly oriented. We then climb an energy hill, but we are off the road we may climb very high without finding the pass that leads over into the next valley. [Pg.54]

Occasionally, though, Mrs. Flowers would drift off the road and down to the Store and Momma would say to me, Sister, you go on and play. As she left I would hear the beginning of an intimate conversation. Momma persistently using the wrong verb, or none at all. [Pg.349]

Gasoline-powered motors used in and around the home include automobiles, off-the-road vehicles, lawn mowers, electrical generators, boat motors, snowmobiles, motorcycles, and snow blowers. In addition to gasoline, these machines have many other toxic chemical containing products associated with their use. A representative list of these are listed in Table 11.3. [Pg.159]

Tyres and related products Pneumatic tyre manufacturing dominates the rubber industry in terms of the quantity of raw rubber consumption. About 50-60% of the rubber produced in the world is used for manufacturing tyres and related items. Tyre products include pneumatic tyres and tubes, sohd tyres, t)n e flaps, retread material, and puncture repair Wts (PRKs). NR is the ideal base material for tyres for aircraft, racing cars, heavy duty vehicles such as trucks and buses, off the road vehicles, and tractors. An oil extended form of natural rubber could be used as base material for the manufacture of winter tyres [61]. [Pg.431]
