False. The sale of fireworks is controlled in most countries, with an age limit often being applied. In the UK and in the USA it is illegal to sell fireworks to anyone under the age of 18. In 2004, in the UK, 1136 people were injured in firework accidents with 515 of them needing hospital treatment. More than half of these casualties were young people under the age of 18. In 2004, in the USA, 9600 people were treated for firework injuries in hospital emergency rooms. [Pg.21]

All inpatients admitted through the hospital emergency room over a 15-month period (June 1982 through August 1983) had urine samples collected in the emergency room for later PCP assay. This represented 1,550 admissions of 1,384 individual patients, but did not include all hospital inpatients (1.e., excluded those who were admitted from outpatient status). PCP was detected in the urine of 16.5 percent (255) of the total admissions and 15.5 percent (215) of individual patients. In the vast majority of cases, the PCP levels were low (less than 30 ng/ml in 85.0 percent). [Pg.233]

I went home and went to bed. After a short while I knew I had to see a doctor. It was all I could do to drag myself to my car and drive. I went to the hospital emergency room with the can of paint and explained what was happening to me. They pulled blood and... [Pg.70]

Ecstasy-related visits to hospital emergency rooms have skyrocketed in recent years, with approximately 250 reports of Ecstasy-related emergencies in 1994 to more than 4,500 in 2000. The majority of the visits are Ecstasy-induced malignant hyperthermia, the risk of which is increased when Ecstasy is combined with other drugs such as LSD ( candy flipping ), psychedelic mushrooms ( hippie flipping ), methamphetamine ( up Ecstasy ), heroin ( down Ecstasy ), and cocaine, Rohypnol, cough syrup, and antidepressants. [Pg.39]

The symptoms of a panic attack are so frightening that an unusually large number of those with panic disorder (in comparison to other psychiatric illnesses) seek treatment on their own accord. However, easily half of those who seek treatment do so in general medical settings such as hospital emergency rooms and the offices of primary care physicians. Easily mistaken for severe and even life-threatening medical conditions such as asthma attacks and heart attacks, panic disorder results in disproportionately higher health care utilization than other anxiety disorders. [Pg.138]

This condition may emerge after a period of relative or absolute abstinence, with the cause being unknown. The duration of drinking and quantity of alcohol required to produce noticeable symptoms vary widely. Abstinence may also result from intercurrent illness, hospitalization for an unrelated illness, or lack of money to buy alcohol. The full spectrum of this syndrome, which ranges from an early, mild withdrawal picture to delirium is frequently seen in large urban hospital emergency room settings. [Pg.296]

Another reason to take melatonin during the day is if you are a shift worker and your schedule rotates every week or so. For example, Lisa worked as a receptionist at a hospital emergency room. As we all know, emergency rooms don t close for the night and must always have people on staff. Lisa s work schedule was to work 9 30 p.m. to 7 30 a.m. for seven nights and then have seven days off. Of course, during her seven days off... [Pg.58]

Cynthia is using a secondary data source to conduct her cost-benefit analysis. After she has identified her variables of interest, she asks the HMO to provide her with baseline information on all heart failure patients prior to implementing her service. The HMO is able to stratify the data by diagnosis, so Cynthiaasks for annual numbers and costs of hospitalizations, emergency room visits, and medications for their heart failure patients (see Table 27-3). [Pg.478]

Civil liability (tort law) Stuart Johnson, R.Ph., is manager of Johnson s Apothecary, a community pharmacy. When he arrived at the pharmacy today, there was a frantic voice-mail message left for him in the middle of the night while the pharmacy was closed. It seems that a staff pharmacist, Dave, made a dispensing error yesterday, and Suzie Jones, a 3-year-old child, was taken unconscious by ambulance to the local community hospital emergency room at 2 00 a.m. Suzie and her family had just moved to town about 2 weeks ago, and yesterday was their first visit to Johnson s Apothecary. [Pg.516]

A bad trip, or "bummer," occurs when a person becomes frightened or finds the LSD-induced experience to be so unpleasant that he or she seeks help. Many bad-trippers go to hospitals, emergency rooms, counselors, or friends to get help. During the past several years many young people have reported bad trips. Physicians call bad trips adverse reactions to LSD. There have been many articles in medical journals describing some of these adverse reactions. [Pg.12]

It is also possible to very quickly screen gastric lavage samples from overdosed victims in the hospital emergency room by chemical ionization mass spectrometry but this is not yet common practice. [Pg.167]

Communication to fire departments and other first responders, hospital emergency room physicians in the nation s 7000 hospitals, and others regarding the availability of advanced burn life support (ABLS) training through both the traditional ABLS courses and the new Web-based ABLS Now course. [Pg.235]

Provision of a laminated burn transfer criteria guide to all hospital emergency rooms in the nation, to also contain reference to ABA Web site information on verified and other burn centers in their area. [Pg.235]

If the spill may expose the public to pesticides or pesticide residues, contact public health officials. If anyone is poisoned by contacting the spill or if you suspect that an exposure may lead to poisoning, call the hospital emergency room and provide them with the brand name, active ingredients, and any other labeling information about human health hazards, signs and symptoms of poisoning, and antidotes. [Pg.283]

One of the key self-regulatory procedures in the cosmetic industry is the voluntary reporting process of adverse reactions. The program is intended to provide data on the type and frequency of adverse reactions reported by consumers or by their medical advisors to the industry. It is an important means of detecting problems that are not treated in hospital emergency rooms (i.e., documented in the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, NEISS) or do not reach poison control centers. [Pg.801]
