Bolt-action

On the night of December 14, 1987, petitioner Deborah Kitchen was shot by her ex-boyfriend, Thomas Knapp, and rendered a permanent quadriplegic, shortly after Knapp purchased a. 22 caliber bolt-action rifle from a local K-Mart retail store. Knapp testified that he had consumed a fifth of whiskey and a case of beer beginning that morning and up until he left a local bar around 8 30 P.M. Knapp drove from the bar to a local K-Mart store where he purchased a rifle and a box of bullets. He returned to the bar and, after observing Kitchen leave in an automobile with friends, follmved in his truck. He subsequently rammed their car, forcing it off the road, and shot Kitchen at the base of her neck.

Chassepot Rifle. A breech-loading rifle invented in 1866 by A.A.Chassepot(1833 1905) and adopted ca 1869 by the Fr forces under the name of "Fusil modele 1866 . It was a bolt-action weapon, which was superior to Ger "needle-gun invented by N.Dreyse ca 1838. Although chassepot had die defect of employing soft paper, self-consuming cartridges, it was used rather successfully during the Fran co-Prussian War of 1870-71. 

The bolt-action principle was rapidly adopted by many nations at the end of the 19th century. Outstanding military weapons of this type are the Mauser and Springfield rifles, brought to a high state of perfection in the early years of the 20th century and since used thruout the world... 

The beginning of the 20th century was marked by the final development of standard service rifles of the US cal. 30 Ml 903 bolt action type. 

At that time, many nations were armed with weapons of similar design. Each weighed about 9 lbs, had a barrel 24 inches long, and was a bolt action breech loader. A large number were made in cal 7.92mm (0.312 inch), but they ranged in size down to 7mm (0.256 inch)...
