Major retailers and food manufacturers have opted for biodegradable packaging in 2005. For example, Wal-Mart Stores selected NatureWorks PLA to manufacture containers for herbs and other products, while Del Monte Fresh Produce increased its use of NatureWorks PLA for packaging fruit.

Hurricane Katrina tested Wal-Mart s emergency operations system to its extreme limits. Katrina shut down 126 Wal-Mart stores in the disaster areas. Even though all but 13 were up and running in 2 weeks, it broke Wal-Mart s typical recovery time of one day after a natural disaster. 

Actual case 2.2 In the autumn of 1996, consumer-goods manufacturers Warner-Lambert and Wal-Mart Stores initiated experimental study of Collaborative Plan, Forecast and Replenish System (CPFR). This information system will promote deeper cooperation on forecasting between dealers and manufacturers. CPFR system could feasibly exchange forecast sketches, details of future sales promotions and past sales trends, and other data. As a result, each side could more conveniently check co-related information and add new information [19]. 

A "horizontal" combinahon, as we described in Chapter 14, means each partner is at the same echelon. Partner capabilities will overlap. An example is two wholesale distributors partnering to offer increased geographical coverage. Partners in different echelons whose capabilities don t overlap represent a "vertical" combination. An example is Wal-Mart, a retailer, providing point-of-sale information to McKesson, a pharmaceutical distributor. McKesson, upstream in the supply chain, is then able to provide timely delivery direct to Wal-Mart stores.
