Of Man

God in materializing Himself, to speak thus, by the Creation of the World, did not think that it was enough to have made such beautiful things, He wished to place upon it the seal of His divinity, and to manifest Himself still more perfectly by the formation of Man. To this end, He made him in His image, and in that of the World. He gave him a soul, a mind and a body and of these three things, united in the same subject, He constituted humanity. 

The MIND,2-5 infinitely more subtle, holds the middle place between the soul and the body, and serves as a bond to unite them, because one can join two extremes only by a mean. It is this, which by its igneous virtue, vivifies and moves the body under the direction of the soul, of which it is the minister sometimes, rebellious to its orders, it follows its own fantasies and inclinations. It represents the firmament, the constituent parts of which are infinitely more subtle than those of the Earth and Water. 

The body draws its nourishment from the purest substance of the three kingdoms of Nature, which pass successively from one into the other to end in Man, who is the complement, the end and the epitome. 

Having been made of Earth and Water, it can be nourished only by an analogous substance, that is to say Water and Earth, and it could not fail to resolve into them. 

The mind is nourished by the Spirit of the Universe and by the quintessence of all that which constitutes it, because it has been made from it. The soul of man communicates with the divine Light from which it derives its origin.

The production of man-made leather has increased rapidly due to its high quaUty (Table 5). Production was first started in Japan, and is expanding to the world. Up to 90% is produced in the Far East, and approximately 50% is exported to the United States and European countries.

The Federal Food, Dmg and Cosmetic (FDAC) Act defines dmgs as "...articles intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease in man..." and "articles (other than food) intended to affect the stmcture of any function of the body of man." In the United States and elsewhere, the introduction of a new dmg is subject to a sequence of weU-defined stages of development and approval (4). Each stage involves either scientific testing or submission and preparation of data and analysis review (Fig. 2).

Within the constraints of this article it is impossible to be comprehensive in the coverage of the subject matter, in terms of the chemicals involved and in the widely varying practices and areas of the world in which the title compounds are ingested by farmed animals. This account is, however, intended to give an overview, citing some relevant examples, of the beneficial and adverse effects, in animals and on the environment, of man-made compounds and naturally produced compounds in extensive and commercial production systems. 

Thus the requirement for the use of man-made drugs and dietary additives as veterinary medicines for the treatment of farmed animals is considerable and worth about 100 million pounds sterling annually in the UK ( 104 million in 1994j io jjjg investment in dietary additives such as vitamins, trace minerals, coccidiostats, pigmenters, enzymes and other probiotics to feed compounders in the UK is worth about 110 million, assuming an addition rate of 2.5 kg per tonne and a cost of approximately 3% of the total concentrate dietary cost (calculated from MAFF data, 1995). ° These data can be increased by a factor of about 10 when the compound feed produced within Europe is considered.
