Evolution of man

The Congress radiated the glow of a very active growth of catalytic science and research around the entire world. There is an obviously mounting recognition of the importance to society as a whole of this broad field of molecular science. Man has recognized more explicitly than before the importance of the skills of selective conversion of molecular matter, to both the preservation and further evolution of man s civilization.

As in previous chapters, to appreciate the use of chemical elements in a new structure, here the brain, the nature of its compartments must be described. The evolution of the brain from the nematode can be traced all the way up to man in its quickly changing construction. No doubt there are lots of possible different arrangements of the zones of the brain but even so a line of ascending organisation can be drawn over a few hundred million years (Fig. 9.4 and Table 9.3). Particular features not stressed so far are the mutual development of the brain nerve and glial cells in zones, the possible functions of the zones (Table 9.4), the position...

Life is sustained by a complex web of chemical reactions. Catalysts, molecules that accelerate the rate of a chemical reaction but that are unchanged by the overall reaction, are essential for life as most reactions would otherwise occur far too slowly. Indeed, it can be argued that the evolution of life is essentially the story of the evolution of catalysis. In nature, most catalysts are proteins and these catalytic proteins, or enzymes, are one of the most remarkable classes of molecules to have been generated during evolution. Enzymes catalyze an enormous range of different reactions and their performances typically far exceed those of man-made catalysts. They can accelerate reactions by anything up to 10 -fold relative to the uncatalyzed reaction, enabling reactions that would otherwise have half-lives of tens of millions of years to be performed in milliseconds.
