Spirit of Man

The soul and spirit of man are clogged by his body. If the spiritual nature is to become the dominating partner, the body must be mortified the alchemists, of course, used this kind of imagery, and it was very real to them. In like manner the spirit of metals will be laid bare and enabled to exercise its transforming influences, only when the material form of the individual metal has been destroyed. The first thing to do, then, is to strip off and cast aside those properties of metals which appeal to the senses. [Pg.22]

Pan is the anthropomorphic or archetypal image of the evolution of the Spirit of Man. The waters of Pan are therefore an agent of evolution or regeneration. John the Baptist conducted his baptism rituals in the Jordan and even today people of some religions return there to immerse themselves in its waters for extraordinarily long periods, even to the point of almost drowning. [Pg.279]

In many ways, both Canada and the United States continue to be involved in a unique experiment of co-operative management of serious environmental issues which plague a shared international resource. Despite the institutional complexity and the history of abuse that man s activities have wrought on the Great Lakes, the experiment to restore and protect them has had several successes typhoid and cholera were eradicated eutrophication problems are now largely under control and where adequate control programs for toxic chemicals have been implemented and enforced (e.g., mercury, DDT, PCBs), there have been associated declines in concentrations in the lakes. These successes have been due in no small way to the spirit of co-operation that has continued to exist between Canada and the United States and the unique institutional arrangements entered into by the two countries. [Pg.221]

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. .. if so be that we suffer with him, that we be also glorified together. [Pg.104]

Such a gendering and polarization of the subatomic world confirmed major Theosophical tenets about the physical and spiritual nature of man. As Joy Dixon has shown, Blavatsky envisioned the highest Deity as without sex or form, but it did embrace polarities As this Absolute Spirit manifested itself in the universe, it created itself as a series of oppositions positive versus... [Pg.86]

The study of phenomena and processes at the phase boundaries of matter is the realm of the surface scientist. The tools of his trade are drawn from across the spectrum of the various scientific disciplines. It is therefore interesting that, in investigating the properties of such boundaries, the sur-facist must transcend the interdisciplinary boundaries between the subjects themselves. In this respect, he harkens back to the days of renaissance man, when knowledge knew no boundaries, and was pursued simply for its own sake, in the spirit of enlightenment. [Pg.221]

In the last chapter I tried to describe the alchemical view of the interdependence of different substances. Taking for granted the tripartite nature of man, the co-existence in him of body, soul, and spirit (no one of which was defined), the alchemists concluded that all things are formed as man is formed that in everything there is a specific bodily form, some portion of soul, and a dash of spirit. I considered the term soul to be the alchemical name for the properties common to a class of substances, and the term spirit to mean the property which was thought by the alchemists to be common to all things. [Pg.26]

In the same way, a more highly developed clairvoyant, who is ca-pable of perceiving the more refined astral matter, sees the man represented at that [etheric] level by a mass of that matter, which is in reality his [astral] body, or vehicle, as regards that plane and exactly the same thing is true with regard to the mental plane in its turn. The soul of man has not one body, but many bodies, for when sufficiently evolved [spiritually] he is able to express himself on all these different levels of nature, and he is, therefore, provided with a suitable vehicle of the matter belonging to each, and it is through these various vehicles that he is able to receive impressions from the [spirit ] world to which they correspond.. . . ... [Pg.106]

Dr. Wollaston, Secretary of the Royal Society, known through his numerous discoveries in chemistry and physics, is a man between forty and fifty years old, of very pleasant appearance, very polished manners, plainness and clearness in his conversation, interest in his slightest gesture, and with such a spirit of justice and gifted with such moderation in his views that it has become a common proverb that whoever argues with Wollaston is wrong (30). [Pg.433]
