Selectivity in the service of man

You cannot take just any man, put a price book in his hand, and say you are now a plastics salesman. The man you choose must be carefully selected, thoroughly trained in the plastics industry, salesmanship, the products of your company, the services of your company, and the philosophies of your company. Only then should you put him in a field office to face his and your customers. While this may seem elementary, the complexities of marketing plastics in the 1960 s will place such a premium on intelligence, information, and skill that we could all do well to review our selection and training programs. [Pg.51]

The cyclodienes, particularly aldrin, dieldrin, and endrin, are considered unsafe for any kind of use. Lindane, on the other hand, has high selectivity in favour of Man. It is included in the World s principal pharmacopoeias as an insecticide, acaricide, and larvicide. A 0.2% alcoholic solution is applied topically for head lice and a 1 % emulsion is employed in the treatment of scabies, in humans. The use of DDT in human medicine, for similar purposes, has greatly diminished in the last decade. It must, however, be pointed out that it has a high safety record in Man, and that government bans on its use are concerned with its accumulation in the food chains of birds and fish where it interferes with the calcium metabolism of shells and bones, respectively (see p. 96). In 1956, Hayes, Durham and Cueto, of the USA Public Health Service, fed 35 mg of DDT per man per day (i.e. 200 times the highest average dietary intake of that time in the USA) to human volunteers for 18 months. None of the subjects developed any symptom related to this chemical. [Pg.306]

Taking into account the conclusions of the analysis of literature study area (reliability system) was assumed to have not been shown explicitly complex mathematical relationships that could be used to estimate the state of airworthiness man-machine system. There are grounds to conclude that the commonly used commercial solutions and research and implementation for many years used a piecemeal approach to achieve and maintain the declared level of airworthiness technical object (the system and its component) for continuoustime ability to implement services. The attention is focused on the analysis and synthesis of selected aspects of the research problem. Not defining numerical indicators and not taking into account technical and functional capabilities CTS and the effects of the conditions and environmental exposures and human origin. In addition, notes the lack of a clearly definite influence are methods of access to the system, data transport mechanisms and guarantee the level characteristics (i.e., reliability, safety, quality, efficiency, etc.) are important from the point of view of the system and the user who is the recipient of its products. This type of approach, particularly in the structures of the system, is focused on one or a few acquaint criteria. [Pg.400]

Most conventional antidepressants lower sexual desire and performance. However, the reversible type A selective MAO inhibitor moclobemide produced intense pathological sexual desire in three men with organic brain disease (two with strokes and one with idiopathic Parkinson s disease) (14). In one man, the hypersexuality was associated with features of pathological jealousy in a paranoid state, but in the other two increased sexuality was an isolated symptom. One of these patients, who had been impotent after the stroke, resorted to telephone sex services, a most uncharacteristic behavior for him. In all cases, the hypersexuality remitted when moclobemide was withdrawn. There have been two previous case reports of moclobemide-induced hypersexuality in women without organic brain disease. This must be a rare adverse effect, but it is possible that in the cases reported here the organic brain disease may have contributed. [Pg.88]

Materials thermal databases expand steadily, becoming more and more difficult to comprehend. Man perceives serially and the speed with which he receives information is small. It is estimated that an average researcher reads 200 papers annually. This is negligible to respect of the one million papers published in the sixty thousand scholarly journals throughout the world though a specialists needs to read a fraction. Tf a person could read the abstracts (about two minutes each) of almost 10 papers on relevant chemistry and physics processed during the last year by Chemical Abstracts Service, it would take him almost 20,000 hours in order to optimize the selection of those 200 papers. And it would take more than two years to complete ... [Pg.14]
