Ownership of the copyright in a work is distinct from ownership of the material object, ie, the copy or phonorecord, in which the copyrighted work is embodied. The transfer of one does not constitute transfer of the other. Over the years attitudes toward objects or finds have changed. In the past, archaeological excavations were done for looting and for curiosity. Today such projects are undertaken with scientific discipline to obtain accurate information about human material culture and interrelationship with the environment.
