Finally mention may be made about the influence of humidity on the electrical insulating properties of plastics. Once again the polymers may be classified into two groups, those which do not absorb water and those which do. The nonabsorbent materials are little affected by humidity whereas the insulation characteristics of the absorbent materials deteriorate seriously. These latter materials are generally certain polar materials which all appear capable of forming some sort of bond, probably a hydrogen bond, with water. Three reasons may be given for the deleterious effects of the water. 

Construction materials must be nonabsorbent and easily cleaned or decontaminated. Seamless flooring avoids cracks from which spilled chemicals can contribute a significant pollution burden to the laboratory air. Epoxy paint should be used for interior walls. Dropped ceilings should be made of nonabsorbent material such as enameled metal. Hoods and sinks should be fabricated of stainless steel. Wood or other porous surfaces must be avoided. 

From optical point of view, an OLED structure can be considered as a multilayer thin-film system composed of absorbing and nonabsorbing materials, as shown in Figure 6.27. Therefore, the optical properties and optimal structure of such a multilayer device can be investigated by applying thin-film optical analysis techniques. Based on the theory of optical admittance analysis for analyzing the optical properties of a thin-film system [92], the optical properties of an OLED thin-film system can be simulated to reduce the ambient reflection.
