Noise building insulation

Normally there is some connection between the airflow rate and noise and vibration generation. This could modify the building construction either to prevent spreading or to diminish the levels of noise and vibrations from the air-handling units. This naturally includes all parts of these units, i.e., fans, pumps, and valves (see Chapters 5 and 9). The demands on noise insulation also include the noise and vibrations from the process equipment, which often has a higher level of noise and vibration than the ventilation system. [Pg.408]

Steam transmission will produce noise. Low steam velocity will help to reduce this. One specific noise area will be if a pressure-reducing valve set is employed. Therefore it is desirable to have this within the boiler house or other building and not outside. Some types of pressure-reducing valves operate at lower sound levels than others, and therefore if environmental noise could be a problem then this should be investigated. Rockwool is a reliable technically oriented provider of insulation materials for the building industry. By using polymers, proper sound insulation can be achieved easily and effectively. Cellular plastic materials (with open celled flexible structures) are shown to be very effective in sound insulation (either for impact noise from footsteps and movement on the top floors of a building, which can usually be eliminated by floor insulation, or airborne noise, which is from noises in the neighbourhood or the street, and which needs wall/party wall insulation for its elimination). In apartment buildings, noise transmitted through walls is alvrays problematic the porous insulation typically used to retard heat flow does not effectively absorb transmitted sounds. Effective absorption of transmitted noise is best achieved with massive materials (such as brick), but this is at variance with modern construction practice using lightweight materials. With all types of clinker cooler in locations susceptible to noise nuisance it is therefore necessary to apply noise control measures. Appropriate sound insulation arrangements are most elaborate and expensive in the case of planetary coolers because of the sheer size of the noise source, the elevated position thereof and the high ambient temperatures due to radiation and convection of heat. Depending on the distance from the cooler to adjacent residential areas, arrangements such as sound-attenuating walls, movable noise suppression covers or sometimes even totally closed buildings with forced ventilation may be necessary. [Pg.582]

It is important to have isolated and insulated electrical grounding for these instruments.
