To a good approximation, thermal conductivity at room temperature is linearly related to electrical conductivity through the Wiedemann-Eran2 rule. This relationship is dependent on temperature, however, because the temperature variations of the thermal and the electrical conductivities are not the same. At temperatures above room temperature, thermal conductivity of pure copper decreases more slowly than does electrical conductivity. Eor many copper alloys the thermal conductivity increases, whereas electrical conductivity decreases with temperature above ambient. The relationship at room temperature between thermal and electrical conductivity for moderate to high conductivity alloys is illustrated in Eigure 5. [Pg.222]

Available horsepower from a gas turbine is a function of air compressor pressure ratio, combustor temperature, air compressor and turbine efficiencies, ambient temperature, and barometric pressure. High ambient temperatures and/or low barometric pressure will reduce available horsepower while low ambient temperatures and/or high barometric pressure will increase available horsepower. All industrial turbines will have high-temperature protection, but in areas subject to very low ambient temperatures horsepower limiting may be required. [Pg.482]

One of the most important problems in the sphere of industrial activity is that attending high ambient temperature. Therefore, the search is on for substances that can increase the resistance of organisms to dangerous overheating. Experiments on white rats show that substance 103, called azomopine, has a protecting effect in different temperature regimes. [Pg.82]

Isocyanate curing These are used when the ambient temperatures are low because they cure rapidly and at temperatures below 5°C. There is a tendency for such films to become brittle with age, and it is preferable not to use such materials at high ambient temperatures, since the pot life and other properties may become unacceptably short. [Pg.130]

The traditional unpredictably violent nature of the Skraup reaction (preparation of quinoline and derivatives by treating anilines with glycerol, sulfuric acid and an oxidant, usually nitrobenzene) is attributed to lack of stirring and adequate temperature control in many published descriptions [1], A reaction on 450 1 scale, in which sulfuric acid was added to a stirred mixture of aniline, glycerol, nitrobenzene, ferrous sulfate and water, went out of control soon after the addition. A 150 mm rupture disk blew out first, followed by the manhole cover of the vessel. The violent reaction was attributed to doubling the scale of the reaction, an unusually high ambient temperature (reaction contents at 32°C) and the accidental addition of excess acid. Experiment showed that a critical temperature of 120°C was attained immediately on addition of excess acid under these conditions [2],... [Pg.1026]

Click chemistry refers to the reaction between an azido functional group and an alkyne to form a [3 + 2] cycloaddition product, a 5-membered triazole ring. This reaction has been used for many years in organic synthesis to form heterocyclic rings. Normally, the click reaction requires high temperatures, and this was the main reason that it was not used as a bioconjugation tool. However, it was discovered that in aqueous solutions and in the presence of Cu(I), the reaction kinetics are dramatically accelerated to provide high yields even at room temperature and ambient pressures (Rostovtsev et al., 2002 Tornoe et al., 2002 Sharpless et al., 2005). [Pg.211]

West Indian bread making, in contrast, was presumably developed to cope with high ambient temperatures when mechanical refrigeration was not available. Attempts to use the sort of bulk fermentation used in the UK would cause problems because of the high dough temperature. [Pg.177]

Note that these three minerals, which are common in the Earth s crust, are not stable at ambient pressure at high temperatures. At ambient pressure, mullite (3Al203-2Si02), is usually found in refractory materials based on these minerals. [Pg.23]
