Neuropsychiatric evaluation

A neuropsychiatric evaluation assesses sensorium, attention, concentration, memory, and higher cognitive functions such as orientation and abstraction. Prior to initiation of the neuropsychiatric evaluation, it should be documented whether the patient has received medications with sedative properties, because the outcome of the examination could be altered if central nervous system depressants have recently been taken. [Pg.1126]

Casualties from WWI and from the Iran-Iraq conflict were noted to be long-term mood and anxiety disorders, as well as posttraumatic stress disorder (Balali-Mood, 1986 Tabatabaee, 1988 Hashemian et al., 2006). Debility, loss of vitality, impaired concentration, sensory hypersensitivity, diminished libido, weakened potency, neuralgic symptoms, and disorders in autonomic regulation are common manifestations. Neuropsychiatric evaluation of 1,428 Iranian veterans 3-9 years after exposure to SM revealed anxiety (15%), depression (46%), personality disorders (31%), convulsions (6%), and psychosis (3%) (Tabarestani et al., 1988). Disorders of... [Pg.43]

In light of this, studies of CSF 5-HIAA have been initiated in a cohort of human volunteers with a history of extensive MDMA use. Most participants in the study are individuals who have recently learned of the neurotoxic properties of MDMA and have asked to be evaluated for possible serotonergic damage. To qualify for the study, subjects must (1) have used MDMA on at least 20 to 25 occasions, (2) be drug-free for at least 2 weeks prior to participating in the study, and (3) not have a history of neuropsychiatric illness thought to involve alterations in serotonin metabolism. To date, 34 individuals have participated in the study. The study is now in progress, and completion is anticipated by 1991. At this time, it would be premature to comment on the results. [Pg.315]

Liotrix is a fixed-ratio LT4/T3 product, although the LT4 T3 ratio is not physiologic for humans. Several studies have been published that evaluate the use of LT4 and T3 combinations in ratios that mimic human physiology. While early studies with these combinations showed improved neuropsychiatric and quality-of-life outcomes compared with LT4 monotherapy, subsequent randomized, controlled trials have shown no outcome benefit.13 Except in rare circumstances (such as patients with impaired T4-to-T3 conversion), there is no rationale for using combinations of LT4 and T3 to treat hypothyroidism. [Pg.672]

Severe neurological involvement in SLE particularly during acute onset is a particularly devastating diagnosis. Management of CNS SLE is reviewed by Sanna et al., 2003a. Cyclophosphamide is the treatment of choice for severe acute non-thrombotic CNS disease. Treatment with steroids versus immunosuppressant therapy with cyclophosphamide is evaluated in a controlled clinical trial of 32 SLE patients with onset of severe neuropsychiatric involvement for < 15 days. Induction treatment involved IV methylprednisolone (3 g) followed by either IV monthly cyclophosphamide or IV MP every 3 m for 1 year. Overall response rate was 75% for either treatment but those on cyclophosphamide had a significandy better response to treatment (p < 0.03) (Barile-Fabris et al., 2005). [Pg.289]

At present there are no selective ligands to evaluate 5-HTj function. Possible in vivo roles of the 5-HTj receptor may be related to neuropsychiatric functions, based primarily on the high affinity of atypical antipsychotic drugs and for several tricyclic antid essants for this receptor [56]. Thus, it may modulate affective state. The localization of m A for the 5-HTj receptor in the limbic system is consistent with this speculation. [Pg.91]
