Nurse practitioner

Prescription drugs are drugs that the federal government has designated to be potentially harmful unless their use is supervised by a licensed health care provider, such as a nurse practitioner, physician, or dentist. Although these drugs have been tested for safety and therapeutic effect, prescription drugs may cause different reactions in some individuals. 

Before a medication can be administered in a hospital or other agency the nurse must have a physician s order. Medications are ordered by the primary health care provider such as a physician, dentist, or in some cases a nurse practitioner.

Pharmacies are continually looking for new and better ideas to differentiate themselves from other retail outlets and to offer additional health care services to their customers. The addition of in-store medical clinics allows customers to receive medical care that is quick, inexpensive, and convenient (Fig. 23-7). Staffed by nurse practitioners and physician assistants that have prescribing authority, patients can choose from a posted list of services provided, receive treatment, and be on their way in less time than at a medical clinic or emergency room. The patient breathes out a short blast of air, as fast as possible, into the device. Normal individuals can achieve airflow velocity of 450-6501 min-1. The peak flow meter is a cheap device which is used by patients at home to monitor their asthma. If a patient s peak flow diminishes below a certain level which has been set by their nurse practitioner or family doctor, they can adjust their own treatment, within specified limits, and control their condition better.
