The NF and reagent grades are employed in the pharmaceutical industry which makes use of benzyl alcohol s local anesthetic, antiseptic, and solvent properties (17—20). It also finds use in cough symps and drops ophthalmic solutions bum, dental (21), and insect repeUant solutions and ointments and dermatological aerosol sprays. It is used in nail lacquers and as a color developer in hair dyes by the cosmetics industry (22), and in acne treatment preparations (23). 

Over the years the cosmetic iadustry has created a wide variety of products for nail care. Some of these, such as cuticle removers and nail hardeners, are functional others, such as nail lacquers, lacquer removers, and nail elongators, are decorative. 

Use of nail lacquer requires monthly removal of the unattached, infected nails by a health care professional in clinical trials less than 12% of patients achieved a clear or almost clear nail... 

Topical 8% ciclopirox olamine (Penlac nail lacquer) has been approved for the treatment of mild to moderate onychomycosis of fingernails and toenails. Although well tolerated with minimal side effects, the overall cure rates in clinical trials are less than 12%.

Cosmetic applications require specific effect pigments that are approved for use according to cosmetic regulations. Amorolfine 5% nail lacquer is licensed for pharmacy sale for the treatment of mild cases of DLSO, affecting up to two nails, in patients aged 18 years or over.
