The above data should be useful for tlie planning to be accomplished by tlie local emergency planning committee and first responders, especially fire departments and HAZMAT teams. Both tlie hazards analysis (discussed in detail in Parts II and IV) and tlie development of emergency countermeasures should be facilitated by the availability of MSDS information. TLV The TLV or Threshold Limit Value refers to a safe level of exposure by inhalation. The definition was established by the American Conference of Governmental Hygienists. There are several variations or criteria levels for the TLV. As an example, hydrogen sulfide has a TLV for short-term exposure limits (STEL) of 15 minutes of only 5 ppm. Comparing this to the TLV-STEL of 400 ppm for carbon monoxide provides an indication of the need to be extremely careful when H2S is suspected. Under OSHA Standards, and particularly on MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) compounds are associated with a time weighted average (TWA) TLV, which is the allowable concentration for an 8-hour continuous exposure period. For firefighting purposes, the short-term exposure is likely more realistic. 

MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) A document required by law to be supplied to a user of a hazardous product, to assist the user in safe use and handling of the hazardous product. 

It is essential to understand the hazards of chemical products so that they can be used safely. Important sources of information for aromatherapists include guidelines from bodies such as RIFM (Research Institute for Fragrance Materials), IFRA (International Fragrance Association), product labels and MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets).

In general, the acute toxicity of halogenated flame retardants is quite low. Manufacturers of benzene are requited by federal law to pubHsh Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) that describe in detail the procedures for its safe handling. Before this experiment is carried out, the student must read the material safety data sheets (MSDS) for all the chemicals used as well as for the products. The instructor must approve that you have read and understood the MSDS for the safe handling of these materials. 

Terpene chemists use trivial names for most of the compounds because the systematic names are much more complex. Common or trivial names, CAS Registry Numbers, and properties of selected terpenes and terpenoids are listed in Tables 2 and 3. Compounds that exhibit chirality also have other Registry Numbers for specific optical isomers. For commercial products, a material safety data sheet (MSDS), which is required by OSHA, frequendy lists multiple names such as a product name, trivial name, IUPAC name and the TSCA name. The MSDS is a good source of information about physical properties, potential health hazards, and other useful information for the safe handling of the materials. When the product is a mixture, the components and their amounts are usually listed along with their Registry Numbers.
