In parallel research to that ofTakayanagi, McCrum and Morris " studied the a and a relaxations in high density polyethylene. They proposed that the a relaxation should be attributed to slip at the boundaries of the lamellae, and put forward a model similar to that of Iwayanagi" in which elastic lamellae are separated by a viscous liquid. To ensure recoverability, the lamellae are pinned at points along their length. The composite solid then shows linear viscodastic behaviour, with a characteristic relaxation which depends on structural parameters. 

Piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity, and ferroelectricity is hardly confined to synthetic polymers. Some biopolymers also possess these properties, and scientists study them to understand how nature exploits these properties. The earliest studies of biopolymer piezoelectricity, for example, go back to 1960s when Morris Shamos and Leroy Lavine (with Michael Morris) studied bone piezoelectricity [39] and later postulated piezoelectricity as a fundamental property of tissues of biological origins [40], In 1968, RNA ferroelectricity was demonstrated by Stanford and Lorey [41]. However, the scientific interest in these properties of biological molecules was dwarfed by the interest in other materials. In 1999 Sidney Lang [42] indicated that compared to thousands of publications on piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and ferroelectric materials, only less than 100 of them were biologically related.

There are a few documented examples of studies of ligand effects on hydrolysis reactions. Immunohistochemical studies carried out in our laboratories have demonstrated the presence of xanthine oxidase in synovial endothelial cells (Stevens etal., 1991). As expected, the activity of this enzyme per unit weight of tissue is generally higher in synovia taken from RA patients due to their increased vascularity (Allen et al., 1987). In addition, it has also been shown that rheumatoid synoviocytes contain increased levels of iron-saturated ferritin (Morris et d., 1986). Xanthine oxidase (but not dehydrogenase) is able to mobilize iron from ferritin, supplying the necessary transition metal catalyst for the Haber-Weiss reaction and promoting OH formation (Biemond eta/., 1986).
