Mary Paton Ramsay commented on the life of first-year women students, and in particular on the segregated seating for women students  

Ramsey noted that the greater proportion came from the country and resided in lodgings. As to gender relations at Aberdeen, she proclaimed them to be far superior than elsewhere  

A strong spirit of unity, a keen esprit de corps, exists among the women students,. All the great Scholarships, Fellowships, Bursaries, and Prizes are open equally to men and women, and though competition is keen, the courtesy shown by the men students to the women students has always been perfect. The same courtesy has not always been shown to women students at other Scottish Universities,, ...47 

As we mentioned earlier, a significant number of women studied chemistry at Aberdeen in the earlier part of the 20th century, and this is quantified in Table 7.2.48 The drop in male 

In order to meet staff shortages in 1917, history was made by the appointment of the first women ever to hold official posts in the department. Miss Jeannie Ross and Miss Beatrice Simpson both joined the department as assistants during the winter term of 1917.. .. In 1918 Dr. Marion Richards took up the post of senior assistant in chemistry.48

The author was brought up in Hastings, on England s south coast, where he attended a local comprehensive school. Despite this education, he achieved entrance to the University of Exeter to read Chemistry. Having obtained a B.Sc. degree and then a doctorate (in 1989) on the electrochemistry of the viologens, he was awarded a fellowship at the University of Aberdeen to study the electrochromism of thin films of tungsten trioxide.

At about the same time, Dr. Andrew Fyfe (1792-1861) of Edinburgh detected iodine in several species of Fucus, in a species of conferva, and in the common sponge of the shops, and published a paper on it in the Edinburgh New Philosophical Journal (10S). After serving as assistant to Professor Hope, he gave private lectures on chemistry and pharmacy at Edinburgh. From 1844 until his death in 1861 he occupied die chair of chemistry at die University of Aberdeen (109).
