Miscellaneous fabricated nonmetallic materials. Items containing flammable solvents or asbestos. [Pg.295]

The primary applications of PVC include hot water and/or steam condensate piping, corrosive chemical piping at elevated temperatures, valves, fume ducts, internal column packing, and miscellaneous fabricated items. Reference [2] provides detailed information on CPVC piping. [Pg.134]

Findings n. (1) Miscellaneous items attached to garments and shoes during manufacture. Included are buttons, hooks, snaps, and ornaments. (2) Miscellaneous fabrics in garments such a zipper tapes, linings, pockets, waistbands, and facings. [Pg.406]

Miscellaneous. Flame-resistant cross-linked polyethylene can be made with a number of fluoroborates and antimony oxide. This self-extinguishing material may contain the fluoroborates of NH, Na", K", Ca ", Mg ", Sr ", or Ba " in amounts of 4—20% (76). Magnesium fluoroborate cataly2es the epoxy treatment of cotton fabrics for permanent-press finishes (77) (see Textiles). [Pg.167]

Miscellaneous Properties. The acoustical properties of polymers are altered considerably by their fabrication into a ceUular stmcture. Sound transmission is altered only slightly because it depends predominandy on the density of the barrier (in this case, the polymer phase). CeUular polymers by themselves are, therefore, very poor materials for reducing sound transmission. They are, however, quite effective in absorbing sound waves of certain frequencies (150) materials with open ceUs on the surface are particulady effective. The combination of other advantageous physical properties with fair acoustical properties has led to the use of several different types of plastic foams in sound-absorbing constmctions (215,216). The sound absorption of a number of ceUular polymers has been reported (21,150,215,217). [Pg.415]

Miscellaneous Applications. CeUular plastics have been used for display and novelty pieces from their eady development. Polystyrene foam combines ease of fabrication with lightweight, attractive appearance, and low cost to make it a favorite in these uses. PhenoHc foam has its principal use in doral displays. Its abiHty to hold large amounts of water for extended periods is used to preserve cut dowers. CeUular poly(vinyl chloride) is used in toys and athletic goods, where its toughness and ease of fabrication into intricate shapes have been valuable. [Pg.417]

Miscellaneous Uses. Research has demonstrated that fabrics could be treated with vaporous trimethyl borate (70% azeotrope) resulting in textiles (qv) that are smoulder resistant (48). [Pg.216]

Miscellaneous Derivatives. Fimehc acid is used as an intermediate in some pharmaceuticals and in aroma chemicals ethylene brassylate is a synthetic musk (114). Salts of the diacids have shown utUity as surfactants and as corrosion inhibitors. The alkaline, ammonium, or organoamine salts of glutaric acid (115) or C-5—C-16 diacids (116) are useflil as noncorrosive components for antifreeze formulations, as are methylene azelaic acid and its alkah metal salt (117). Salts derived from C-21 diacids are used primarily as surfactants and find apphcation in detergents, fabric softeners, metal working fluids, and lubricants (118). The salts of the unsaturated C-20 diacid also exhibit anticorrosion properties, and the sodium salts of the branched C-20 diacids have the abUity to complex heavy metals from dilute aqueous solutions (88). [Pg.64]

Miscellaneous Fastness Tests. The fastness to hot pressiag, ISO 10S-X1 /, test is similar to the fastness to dry heat test except that the time of pressing is 15 s (again at 150, 180, and 210°C), and the test can either be carried out dry when a damp cotton fabric containing its own weight of water is placed on top of the dry test fabric, or wet when the test fabric also contains its own weight of water. [Pg.377]

Of the three categories, the packed column is by far the most commonly used for the absorption of gaseous pollutants. Miscellaneous gas-absorption equipment could include acid gas scrubbers that are commonly classified as either wet or diy. In wet scrubber systems, the absorption tower uses a hme-based sorbent liquor that reacts with the acid gases to form a wet/solid by-product. Diy scrubbers can be grouped into three catagories (1) spray diyers (2) circulating spray diyers and (3) dry injection. Each of these systems yields a diy product that can be captured with a fabric filter baghouse downstream and... [Pg.2185]

The end-use pattern of trichloroethylene in the United States was estimated as follows (CMR 1986) vapor degreasing of fabricated metal parts, 80% chemical intermediates, 5% miscellaneous uses, 5% and exports, 10%. The most important use of trichloroethylene, vapor degreasing of metal parts, is closely associated with the automotive and metals industries (CMR 1983). [Pg.200]

The choice of the filter medium is often the most important consideration to ensure efficient operation of a filter. Its function is generally to act as a support for the filter cake, while the initial layers of cake provide the actual filter. The filter medium should be selected primarily on the basis of its ability to retain solids without binding. It should be mechanically strong and corrosion resistant, and should offer as little resistance as possible to the flow of the filtrate. The media are made from widely different materials such as cotton, wool, linen, nylon, jute, silk, glass fiber, porous carbon, metals, rayon and other synthetics, and miscellaneous materials like porous rubber. Cotton fabrics are most commonly used because they are available in a wide variety of weaves, and are cheap. [Pg.213]

Some miscellaneous examples of QD synthesis using surfactant systems are described below. A layer-by-layer [206] structure of dithiol self-assembled monolayers (SAM) and CdS mono- and multilayer nanoparticles were fabricated on a gold substrate covered with alkanedithiol. SAMs were formed by an alternate immersion of the substrate into ethanolic solutions of dithiol, and dispersion of CdS nanoparticles (ca. 3nm in diameter), the latter of which was prepared in A0T/H20/heptane w/o microemulsions. [Pg.219]

In a survey of volatile organic chemicals in 1159 household items including household cleaners and polishes, paint-related products, fabric and leather treatments, cleaners for electronic equipment, oils, greases and lubricants, adhesive-related products, automotive products and miscellaneous products, ethylbenzene was identified in 157 of 658 (24%) of the products tested. The highest mean concentrations and percentage of products in each category in which ethylbenzene was found were as follows 7.2% w/w in 7.5% of automotive products, 2.4% w/w in 47.8% of paint-related... [Pg.238]
