Epoxy treatment

Miscellaneous. Flame-resistant cross-linked polyethylene can be made with a number of fluoroborates and antimony oxide. This self-extinguishing material may contain the fluoroborates of NH, Na", K", Ca ", Mg ", Sr ", or Ba " in amounts of 4—20% (76). Magnesium fluoroborate cataly2es the epoxy treatment of cotton fabrics for permanent-press finishes (77) (see Textiles). [Pg.167]

The polyaddition reaction is influenced by the stmcture and functionaHty of the monomers, including the location of substituents in proximity to the reactive isocyanate group (steric hindrance) and the nature of the hydroxyl group (primary or secondary). Impurities also influence the reactivity of the system for example, acid impurities in PMDI require partial neutralization or larger amounts of the basic catalysts. The acidity in PMDI can be reduced by heat or epoxy treatment, which is best conducted in the plant. Addition of small amounts of carboxyHc acid chlorides lowers the reactivity of PMDI or stabilizes isocyanate terrninated prepolymers. [Pg.342]

Synthesis of (A) started with the combination of 2,4,6-trimethylphenol and allyl bromide to give the or/Ao-allyl dienone. Acid-catalyzed rearrangement and oxidative bydroboration yielded the dienone with a propanol group in porlactone ring were irons in the product as expected (see p. 275). Treatment with aqueous potassium hydroxide gave the epoxy acid, which formed a crystalline salt with (R)-l-(or-naphthyl)ethylamine. This was recrystallized to constant rotation. [Pg.319]

Treatment with hydrogen peroxide converts butenediol to 2,3-epoxy-l,4-butanediol (105) or gives hydroxylation to erythritol [149-32-6], C H qO (106). Under strongly acidic conditions, tetrahydro-3,4-furanediol is the principal product (107). [Pg.107]

Bonding. Surface treatment, such as chemical etch, corona, or flame treatments, is required for adhesive bonding of Tefzel. Polyester and epoxy compounds are suitable adhesives. [Pg.370]

Dieldrin [60-57-1] or l,2,3,4,10,10-hexachloro-l,4,4t ,5,8,8t -hexahydro-6,7-epoxy-l,4- <7o, Aro-5,8-dimethanonaphthalene (34) (mp 176°C, vp 0.4 mPa at 20°C) is formed from aldrin by epoxidation with peracetic or perben2oic acids. It is soluble in water to 27 / g/L. Aldrin and dieldrin have had extensive use as soil insecticides and for seed treatments. Dieldrin, which is very persistent, has had wide use to control migratory locusts, as a residual spray to control the Anopheles vectors of malaria, and to control tsetse flies. Because of environmental persistence and propensity for bio accumulation, registrations in the United States were canceled in 1974. [Pg.277]

Waterproof. Waterproofing barrier systems may be either hot- or cold-appHed. The hot-appHed generaUy involve a bituminous material such as asphalt used in conjunction with a reinforcing fabric such as roofing felt, cotton, or glass cloth. Cold-appHed can be bituminous or elastomeric materials either in Hquid or sheet form, with or without fabric reinforcement. Liquid elastomeric treatments include neoprene, polyurethanes, and blends of these or epoxies with bituminous materials. Among the commonly used precured elastomeric sheet materials are neoprene, polyisobutylene, EPDM mbber, and plasticized PVC. Polyethylene and PVC films and nonwoven plastic or glass fabric coated with bituminous materials also find use (78). Because these... [Pg.310]

Groundwater is vulnerable to pollution by chemicals carried by rainwater, leaching from waste sites or from waste water carrying industrial or agricultural effluent. Treatment of drinking water may remove some, but not all, of these contaminants. Some polycarbonate or metal water pipes that are lined with epoxy resin lacquers may release bisphenol A. [Pg.15]

Figure 20-14 shows the protection of a gravel filter in the treatment of raw water. The 200-m internal surface was coated with 300 jlm of tar-pitch epoxy resin. Long-term experiments indicated that at = -0.83 V, no cathodic blisters were formed, but were formed at more negative potentials (see Section 5.2.1.4). TiPt anodes 400 and 1100 mm in length, 12 mm in diameter, and with an active surface of 0.11 m were installed [29]. [Pg.461]

Rider and Amott were able to produce notable improvements in bond durability in comparison with simple abrasion pre-treatments. In some cases, the pretreatment improved joint durability to the level observed with the phosphoric acid anodizing process. The development of aluminum platelet structure in the outer film region combined with the hydrolytic stability of adhesive bonds made to the epoxy silane appear to be critical in developing the bond durability observed. XPS was particularly useful in determining the composition of fracture surfaces after failure as a function of boiling-water treatment time. A key feature of the treatment is that the adherend surface prepared in the boiling water be treated by the silane solution directly afterwards. Given the adherend is still wet before immersion in silane solution, the potential for atmospheric contamination is avoided. Rider and Amott have previously shown that such exposure is detrimental to bond durability. [Pg.427]

Primers are required to be resistant to all of the same fluids and environments as the adhesive, and are in addition expected to be compatible with secondary finishes such as corrosion and fluid resistant primers applied to cured bond assemblies. The most commonly used primers for 250°F cured epoxy adhesives also have active corrosion inhibitors themselves to combat corrosion at bondlines. This last requirement is somewhat dated, evolving from the severe corrosion and delamination problems experienced before U.S. airframe manufacturers adopted durable surface treatments. [Pg.1154]

The preparation of other 6-aIkylated steroids has also been accomplished with 5,6-epoxides. Thus treatment of 3,3-ethylenedioxy-5a,6a-epoxy steroids (6) with acetylenedimagnesium bromide, propargylmagnesium bromide " or phenylmagnesium bromide, gives the corresponding 6 -ethynyl-, 6j5-propargyl- and 6/ -phenyl-3,3-ethylenedioxy-5a-ols. [Pg.84]

Base-catalyzed fragmentation also occurs on treatment of 5,6j9-epoxy-19-aldehyde (hemiacetal, hemiacetal-acetate or 3)5,6/ -acetal) accessible from nitrous acid-acetic acid treatment of 5a-bromo-6jS-hydroxy-19-oximes followed by mild base hydrolysis (yield not reported)... [Pg.273]
