Minor injury

Aspinn possesses a number of properties that make it an often recommended drug It is an analgesic effective m relieving headache pain It is also an antiinflammatory agent providing some relief from the swelling associated with arthritis and minor injuries Aspinn IS an antipyretic compound that is it reduces fever How aspmn does all this was once a mystery but is now better understood and will be discussed m Section 26 6 Each year more than 40 million lb of aspirin is produced m the United States a rate equal to 300 tablets per year for every man woman and child... [Pg.1006]

Marginal III May cause minor injury, major property damage, or major system damage. [Pg.94]

The cause of the explosion, which also left four people seriously injured and 31 others with minor injuries, is unknown. A Hoechst Celanese spokesman says that the first blast occurred near a gas-fired boiler and the second blast at a nearby reactor in which butane is reacted with steam to produce acetic acid. The 35-year-old plant employs 600 persons, 150 as contract maintenance and construction workers, but the blasts on Saturday only involved a weekend crew of 60. [Pg.257]

Although damage to the plant was extensive, there was no loss of life. There were 15 disabling and 102 non-disabling injuries. Slight damage and minor injuries also resulted beyond... [Pg.268]

Providing immediate first aid can prevent minor injuries becoming major ones. [Pg.11]

Substances, which after exposure can cause irritation leading to minor injuries only, even if no treatment is undertaken. They only require use of a breathing mask with cartridge. Also included are materials that give off irritant fumes in fire conditions and those that are an irritant to skin without causing any destruction of the tissues. [Pg.129]

Nonspecific symptoms include anorexia, fatigue, easy bruising and bleeding from minor injuries, decreased libido, and pruritus (particularly with biliary involvement). [Pg.328]

Exposure to volatile stress signals such as ethylene and jasmonic acid can induce the synthesis and accumulation of high levels of phenolic compounds. The effect is not readily apparent because the accumulated phenolic compounds remain sequestered in organelles within the induced cells. However, increased membrane permeability resulting from even a minor injury or stress can result in levels of discoloration that are abnormally high for that cultivar. [Pg.99]

Category III - Marginal. May cause minor injury, minor occupational illness, or minor system damage. [Pg.46]

It has been reported1 that, during the preparation of f-butyl hypochlorite according to the directions published in this series,2 an explosion occurred and caused moderate physical damage and minor injury to the operator. The cause of the accident has been attributed to lack of proper temperature control during addition of chlorine. It is strongly recommended that the reaction vessel be fitted with a thermometer that dips into the reaction mixture and that the rate of flow of chlorine be regulated so that the temperature of the reaction mixture never exceeds 20°. [Pg.14]

On June 22, 1997, an explosion and fire destroyed an olefin plant at the Shell Deer Park, Texas chemical complex. Thirty workers received minor injuries and extensive damage resulted to both the plant and adjacent community. The incident was caused by the sudden failure of a pneumatic check valve in a 300-psig gas compressor discharge line that led to a large release of propylene vapor. A few minutes after the release, the gas ignited causing a vapor cloud explosion and flash fire. [Pg.345]

OSHA Recordable Cases— Work-related deaths, injuries and illnesses (other than minor injuries requiring only first aid treatment) which involve medical treatment, loss of consciousness, restriction of work or motion, or transfer to another job. [Pg.438]

In the eye, solutions of 15% or more caused lasting corneal damage but a 5% solution only caused minor injury. The injury caused by single applications appears to be attributable to the highly alkaline character of DETA, rather than to some other innate toxicity. ... [Pg.250]

In rabbits, repeated skin application of the liquid for 10 days caused dermatitis. The liquid dropped in the eye of a rabbit caused minor injury. [Pg.417]

Scholz and Woods reviewed 136 cases of mustard injuries of the eye, including the 84 described by Mann. They found no essential difference between "chronic" and "recurring" cases. Although a number of injured men retained "fair visual acuity" after the initial burn, vision degenerated later the average loss of vision (excluding five minor injuries) was about 88%. The only effective treatment for these patients was contact lenses. [Pg.115]

Imagine a laboratory experiment—perhaps the reaction of ethylene (C2H4) with hydrogen chloride (HC1) to prepare ethyl chloride (C2H5CI), a colorless, low-boiling liquid that doctors and athletic trainers use as a spray-on anesthetic for minor injuries. [Pg.80]

Athletic injuries impair performance, prolong training and, at worst, end careers or even lives. Avoiding injury is critical to athletic performance, except in those extremely rare examples where the adversity of injury propels an athlete beyond even his/her own personal best. Sleep deprivation is commonly cited as a precipitating or causal factor in accidents and injuries (see Chaps. 10, 12, 14, and 15). It is therefore curious to discover that there is essentially no scientific research on sleep deprivation and athletic injury. Lund (75) followed 12 volleyball players over 61 hr of sleep deprivation. There were 29 minor injuries, which seemed elevated, but there was no control group for comparison. [Pg.325]

One report stated that there were about 200 people staffing the plant at the time of the incident and 16 minor injuries caused primarily by flying debris. The fire department stated the blast was felt 40 miles away. [27]... [Pg.119]

Apoptosis is programed cell death and differs from necrosis in that it results in minimal inflammation and release of genetic material. Although necrosis is the predominant process that follows acute ischemia, apoptosis is important after more minor injury, particularly within the ischemic penumbra. Apoptosis is executed by the production, activation and action of caspases, which are protein-cleaving enzymes that dismantle cytoskeleton proteins and enzymes responsible for cellular repair (Zhang et al. 2004). Neurons are particularly susceptible to caspase-mediated cell death after cerebral ischemia, as demonstrated by the reduction in infarct size by caspase inhibitors in experimental models. [Pg.50]
