Miller

There was one star student who became a key member of the staff of the Chemistry Department — Christina Cruickshank Miller.77 Christina Miller was born on 29 August 1899 in Coatbridge, the elder of two sisters. In grade school, Miller developed an interest and aptitude towards mathematics. At the time, she was told that, as a woman, she could only use her mathematical aptitude towards a career as a school teacher. Unfortunately, she had become deaf as a result of childhood measles and rubella, and this was considered a major impediment [Pg.286]

Walker accepted Miller as a graduate student and, from 1921 until the completion of her Ph.D. in 1924, she worked with him on the process of diffusion in solution. She was then awarded a two-year Carnegie Research Fellowship to undertake independent research. The position enabled her to study a problem that had long fascinated chemists the glow produced when tetraphosphorus hexaoxide is oxidized. During this time, she [Pg.287]

ill health in the form of otosclerosis, together with family commitments (care of a relative), caused Miller to take early retirement in 1961. Never one to remain idle, she pursued interests in genealogy and in the history of Edinburgh. Her biographer, Robert Chalmers, commented  [Pg.288]

It is arguable that had she been a man. .. she might have become one of the UK s first professors of analytical chemistry. At a time when analytical chemistry was practically non-existent in UK universities she provided courses that would stand comparison with the best available today.. .. Her work was highly esteemed by many internationally renowned analysts.77(a) [Pg.288]

A recent design of the maximum bubble pressure instrument for measurement of dynamic surface tension allows resolution in the millisecond time frame [119, 120]. This was accomplished by increasing the system volume relative to that of the bubble and by using electric and acoustic sensors to track the bubble formation frequency. Miller and co-workers also assessed the hydrodynamic effects arising at short bubble formation times with experiments on very viscous liquids [121]. They proposed a correction procedure to improve reliability at short times. This technique is applicable to the study of surfactant and polymer adsorption from solution [101, 120]. [Pg.35]

The equilibrium shape of a liquid lens floating on a liquid surface was considered by Langmuir [59], Miller [60], and Donahue and Bartell [61]. More general cases were treated by Princen and Mason [62] and the thermodynamics of a liquid lens has been treated by Rowlinson [63]. The profile of an oil lens floating on water is shown in Fig. IV-4. The three interfacial tensions may be represented by arrows forming a Newman triangle ... [Pg.112]

Empirically, however, the results are reasonably accurate, and the approach is a very useful one. An application of it to various Miller index planes is given by... [Pg.269]
