Bill was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1970, he was chairman of its Chemistry Section during 1977-1981, and he was member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was awarded Guggenheim fellowships in 1951 and 1966, a National Science Foundation Senior Fellowship in 1958, and a Miller Research Professorship at Berkeley in 1963. His numerous honors from the American Chemical Society include the California Section Award in 1959, the Ernest Guenther Award in 1973, and an Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award in 1990. Among the international recognitions Bill received are a U.S. Senior Scientist Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, an honorary doctorate from the University of Bordeaux, two Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Awards, and an honorary membership in Pharmaceutical Society of Japan.

It has been suggested that the potential for biological degradation of 2,3,7,8-TCDD in a wide variety of environmental samples is low (Arthur and Frea 1989). The fate of 2,3,7,8-TCDD in sediment and water from two lakes in Wisconsin was examined (Ward and Matsumura 1978). After incubation periods of up to 589 days, little metabolism of 2,3,7,8-TCDD was detected. The slight metabolism that was detected was stimulated by the presence of sediment and the addition of nutrients (Ward and Matsumura 1978). Also, 2,3,7,8-TCDD does not hydrolyze in water (Mabey et al. 1982 Miller et al. 1987).

In Salem county in the north-eastern United States an outbreak of bewitchment started in December 1691 and continued into 1692, reaching a peak in April and then again in July. Of the thirty people affected, twenty-four complained of fits, of being pinched, pricked, or bitten, all of which were considered to be symptoms of bewitchment . These bewitchment cases led to the infamous Salem witch trials, of which there are court records. The trials continued until October 1692 when they were prohibited by the governor of Massachusetts, by which time twenty people had been executed. The events have been chillingly portrayed in Arthur Miller s play The Crucible.
