In 1919, he made history with yet another of his inventions when his multiple-tuned antenna, antistatic receiver, and magnetic amplifier were used to transmit the first two-way radio conversation. This great event took place 900 miles out to sea, between the Trans-Atlantic Marconi Company station at New Brunswick and the steamship George Washington, with President Woodrow Wilson on board as a witness.

The number of significant figures in the answer is set by the data (4 sig. figs.) but the answer has extra source of error since the conversion from kilometers to miles is only good to 4 sig. figs.

Dimensional analysis, sometimes called the factor label (unit conversion) method, is a method for setting up mathematical problems. Mathematical operations are conducted with the units associated with the numbers, and these units are cancelled until only the unit of the desired answer is left. This results in a setup for the problem. Then the mathematical operations can efficiently be conducted and the final answer calculated and rounded off to the correct number of significant figures. Phenol has been detected in the effluent discharges of a variety of industries. It was found in petroleum refinery waste water at concentrations of 33.5 ppm (Pfeffer 1979) and 100 ppb (Paterson et al. 1996), in the treated and untreated effluent from a coal conversion plant at 4 and 4,780 ppm, respectively (Parkhurst et al. 1979), and in shale oil waste water at a maximum of 4.5 ppm (Hawthorne and Sievers 1984). It has also been detected in the effluent from a chemical specialties manufacturing plant at 0.01-0.30 ppm (Jungclaus et al. 1978), in effluent from paper mills at 5-8 ppb (Keith 1976 Paterson et al. 1996), and at 0.3 ppm in a 24-hour composite sample from a plant on the Delaware River, 2 and 4 miles downriver from a sewage treatment plant (Sheldon and Hites 1979). 

Incubations of heptachlor with a mixed culture of soil microorganisms for 12 weeks showed conversion of heptachlor to chlordene, 1-exohydroxychlordene, heptachlor epoxide, and chlordene epoxide. A mixed culture of soil microorganisms, obtained from a sandy loamy soil, degraded heptachlor epoxide to the less toxic 1-exohydroxychlordene. Conversion was about 1% per week during the 12-week test period (Miles et al. 1971).

Dimensional analysis is most useful in doing conversions of numbers from one unit to another, such as in converting a value in miles per hour to feet per second. Most people probably do not know that to convert miles per hour to feet per second, you multiply by 1.4666667. However, you can perform this conversion using more commonly known information. 

The metric system, or Systeme International d Unites (SI system as it is commonly known), is the predominant system of measurement in the world. In fact, the United States is one of only about three countries that do not commonly use the metric system. The metric system attempts to eliminate odd and often difircult-to-remember conversions for measurements (5,280 feet in a mile, for example). It is a decimal-based system with standard terminology for measurements of length, volume, and mass (weight). It also uses standard prefixes to measure multiples of the standard units.
