Effect of water on the adhesive. The influence of water on the adhesive is generally reversible, so that any deterioration in, say, mechanical properties is recovered upon drying. The extent of this influence depends upon the adhesive s composition. All polymers absorb greater quantities of water when above their Tg, so that rubbery materials tend to show greater water absorption than rigid adhesives. Interestingly, the key position in structural metal-to-metal adhesives for airframe construction is occupied by epoxy-nylon adhesives, some of which display water uptakes of the order of 14%. [Pg.168]

Flame spray metallising is widely used for the protection of metal against corrosion, especially for in situ protection of stmctural members. The principal metal used for spraying of plastics is sine. Aluminum and copper are also used. If the distance from the part is too great, the zinc solidifies before it touches the part and adhesion is extremely poor. If the molten zinc oxidizes, conductivity and adhesion are poor. If the distance is too short, the zinc is too hot and the plastic warps or degrades. These coatings are not as dense as electrically deposited coatings because of numerous pores, oxide inclusions, and discontinuities where particles have incompletely coalesced. [Pg.135]

Fiber dmms can be produced to meet a wide variety of requirements. They can be constmcted with adhesives for water resistance, their interiors can be coated, their walls and ends can incorporate metal foil or asphalt-impregnated pHes, and their exteriors can be decorated by painting, varnishing, and silk screening for both ornamental and functional purposes. [Pg.513]

Starch pyrodextrins and British gums have the abiUty, in aqueous dispersion, to form films capable of bonding like or unlike materials. Thus, they have uses as adhesives for envelopes, postage stamps, and other products. These dextrins are used in glass-fiber siting to protect the extmded fiber from abrasion, and as binders for metal core castings, water color paints, briquettes, and many other composite materials (qv). [Pg.346]

Water-borne adhesives are preferred because of restrictions on the use of solvents. Low viscosity prepolymers are emulsified in water, followed by chain extension with water-soluble glycols or diamines. As cross-linker PMDI can be used, which has a shelf life of 5 to 6 h in water. Water-borne polyurethane coatings are used for vacuum forming of PVC sheeting to ABS shells in automotive interior door panels, for the lamination of ABS/PVC film to treated polypropylene foam for use in automotive instmment panels, as metal primers for steering wheels, in flexible packaging lamination, as shoe sole adhesive, and as tie coats for polyurethane-coated fabrics. PMDI is also used as a binder for reconstituted wood products and as a foundry core binder. [Pg.350]

Low viscosity cellulose acetate is used in lacquers and protective coatings for paper, metal, glass, and other substrates and as an adhesive for cellulose photographic film because of its quick bonding rate and excellent bond peel strength (135) (see Coatings). Heat-sensitive adhesives for textiles have also been prepared from cellulose acetate (136). Extmded cellulose acetate film makes an excellent base for transparent pressure-sensitive tape (137) (see Adhesives). [Pg.259]

In the adhesives area, thermoplastic, fatty polyamides are used in hot-melt and heat-seal adhesives for leather, paper, plastic and metal. Blends of EDA- and DETA-based polyamides are suggested for use in metal can seam sealants with improved toughness (234) pressure sensitive adhesives have been formulated with DETA-based polyamides (235) and anionic and cationic suspensoid adhesives are used as heat-seal coatings in paper converting (236). There have been other approaches to obtaining rubber/metal adhesion besides primers or additives consisting of phenolics or epoxies plus halogenated elastomers. For example, carboxylated polymers (olefins and diolefins copolymerized with acrylic acid monomers) have shown excellent adhesion to metals. While polar monomers are usually beneficial in acrylic PSA formulations, there are times when their presence is deleterious. Examples of this may be the use of acrylic acid containing adhesives for electronic applications, for adhering to some metallic surfaces, or for application to paper used in books. Higher levels of acrylic acid not only increase the acidity of the PSA but they also increase the moisture uptake in the adhesive making dissociation of the acid easier. This can increase corrosion problems in the electronic or metal applications, or severe discoloration and degradation of paper with time. The latter is often a significant concern to librarians who deal with repair and archival restoration of books. In applications such as these, acid-free adhesives are more desirable, or at the very least the amount of acid has to be low and caution has to be taken to fully incorporate the monomer into the PSA. [Pg.491]

Table 1 contains the metal-to-metal engineering property requirements for Boeing Material Specification (BMS) 5-101, a structural film adhesive for metal to metal and honeycomb sandwich use in areas with normal temperature exposure. The requirements are dominated by shear strength tests. Shear strength is the most critical engineering property for structural adhesives, at least for the simplistic joint analysis that is commonly used for metal-to-metal secondary structure on commercial aircraft. Adhesive Joints are purposefully loaded primarily in shear as opposed to tension or peel modes as adhesives are typically stronger in shear than in Mode I (load normal to the plane of the bond) loading. [Pg.1146]

Salts of alkyl phosphates and types of other surfactants used as emulsifiers and dispersing agents in polymer dispersions are discussed with respect to the preparation of polymer dispersions for use in the manufactoring and finishing of textiles.
