One procedure makes use of a box on whose silk screen bottom powdered desiccant has been placed, usually lithium chloride. The box is positioned 1-2 mm above the surface, and the rate of gain in weight is measured for the film-free and the film-covered surface. The rate of water uptake is reported as u = m/fA, or in g/sec cm. This is taken to be proportional to - Cd)/R, where Ch, and Cd are the concentrations of water vapor in equilibrium with water and with the desiccant, respectively, and R is the diffusional resistance across the gap between the surface and the screen. Sublimation (diffusion) printing is a textile process in which color patterns in dry die crystals are transferred from a release film to the fabric under high heat and pressure. The process has been adapted to plastics. The equipment used is very similar to that used for hot stamping. Under heat and pressure, the dye crystals sublime (go directly to the vapor phase from the solid phase without melting) and the vapor penetrates the plastic product. As a result, the decoration is very durable and wear resistant. It is also cost competitive against other processes such as two-step injection molding or silk screening. [Pg.545]

The coating apparafus consisfs of a silk screen mesh fixed to a frame with sufficient tension to squeeze the ink through the screen and onto the blank substrate (e.g., polyimide). Paper is reported to have been made in China as ea rly as A.D. 100, when cellulose fibers from mulberry bark were pounded into thin sheets. Polyethylene parts are decorated by silk screening, hot stamping, or dry offset printing. For satisfactory printing, the surface must be oxidized by hot air, flame, chlorination, sulfunc acid-dichromate solution, or electronic bombardment. Hot air or flame methods are used with molded parts flame or electronic methods with films. Inks specially made for polyethylene give best results.
