IFN-p-la is used to treat patients with a relapsing form of MS. It is not a cure for MS however, it may slow some disabling effects of the disease. IFN-p-la may also decrease the number of relapses of MS. The possible mechanisms of action for the treatment of MS include the antagonism of IL-4 and IFN-7. It also modifies the mechanics of blood barrier since it inhibits cell adhesion, cell migration and metalloproteinase activity. IFN-P induces IL-10 and TGF-p, which are anti-inflammatory cytokines. It is also used for the treatment of genital warts.

Two further perspectives on the use of tetracychnes in rheumatoid arthritis have been pubhshed (14,15). Bismuth gallate (formerly known as Dermatol ) is antiseptic, astringent and siccative. Gallium nitrate reduces metalloproteinase activity in wounds and promotes the migratory phenotype of keratinocytes that can move more easily over the temporary protein matrix and close the wound more quickly. It reduces keratinocyte ability to synthesize the desmosomes that anchor the cell locally and limit its movements.

It has been demonstrated that EGCG can inhibit the matrix metalloproteinase activity at a relatively low dose. EGCG inhibits the activity of secreted MMP-2 and MMP-9 at concentrations of 8-13 pM. Meanwhile, 1 pM EGCG increased the expression of TIMP-1 and TIMP-2, proteins that inhibit the activity of activated MMPs. Because such concentrations of tea polyphenols are physiologically significant, this is an attractive mechanism for the observed anti-invasive and anti-angiogenic activities of EGCff and other tea polyphenols in vivo.
