Metal clinching

The majority of sterile products rely on the use of a rubber closure (synthetic or natural) which is held in position by some form of overcap. The latter may be a metal screw cap or seal which is clinched or rolled under a bead. The rubber may be a disc or a plug and be applied either as a combination seal (the disc or plug is pre-fitted in a metal seal) or as separate components. 

Closures for open-headed pails and drums are full-diameter lids. The seal is usually effected by a rubber or plastic gasket contained in a channel in the lid. The closure is then completed and made mechanically secure by means of a separate metal closing ring fitted with a bolt or lever type fastening. The lids of pails sometimes incorporate lugs which are mechanically clinched to the upper flange of the pail. 

Clinching is a way of joining sheet metal parts without connecting elements. A specially designed press-driven set of dies deforms the parts at the joint to provide a friction-locked and keyed connection. 

This duty cycle creates challenges that have been met by designers of liquid metal reactors that operate at high temperatures, such as the Fast Flux Test Facility and the Clinch River Breeder Reactor Plant. However, this was done at great cost for the analyses, extremely high manufacturing costs, and has created a disconnect between design transients and the real world. 

Self-piercing rivets. Fig. 12.12(d), have been specially developed to pierce thicker metal and clinch in the same operation. For metal up to 4.7mm thick, the self-piercing rivet is made from special steel and is heat-treated to give the required hardness for piercing and ductility for clinching. One use of this type of rivet is automatic riveting in the production of garage doors. 

In the early 1980s, the liquid metal fast breeder reactor (LMR) program focused on deployment of the Clinch River Breeder Reactor (CRBR) in Tennessee. The program encountered difficulties because of cost escalations and schedule delays. The LMR program faced challenges because uranium was not becoming scarce and prohibitively expensive as had been predicted earlier.

Mechanical clinching this is a form of mechanical fastening which involves the joining of two sheets of metal by deep drawing the sheets into a cup shape using punch and die tooling. 

Other joining techniques such as riveting, bolting, clinching, etc., are not as such factors of corrosion, because they do not modify the metal structure hke welding or brazing. However, their use is part of the principles of construction which will be discussed in Section 6.3.2.
