Clinching

The United States continued fast-breeder reactor research and development with the building of the fast flux test faciHty (FFTF) at Hanford and the SEFOR reactor in Arkansas (59). The next plaimed step was to build a prototype power reactor, the Clinch River fast-breeder plant (CRFBP), which was to be located near Oak Ridge, Teimessee. 

A fairly detailed risk analysis of fires was in the Clinch River Breeder Reactor (CRBR) Risk Assessment Study, 1977. In this study, FMEA was used to identify important fire locations for a wide variety of combustibles, including cables, oil, and sodium. The resulting estimate of the frequency of fire-induced core melt, 5E-7 per reactor-year, is substantially below the estimates discussed above. 

Clinch River Breeder Reactor Project, the first large-scale demonstration breeder reactor is constructed near Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The project died for lack of support, however.

It is our experience that to the first question, the most common student response is something akin to Because my teacher told me so . One is tempted to say that it is a pity that the scientific belief of so mat r students is sourced from an authority, rather than from empirical evidence - except that when chemists are asked question (ii), they find it not at all easy to answer. There is, after all, no single defining experiment that conclusively proves the claim, even though it was the phenomenon of Brownian motion that finally seems to have clinched the day for the atomists 150 or so years ago. There is still no consensus for a mechanism for the high Tc in the cuprate superconductors. Nonetheless, we have learned much about the electronic structure of such materials. Some proposed theories may now be discarded. The discovery of the n-type cuprate superconductors was the clinching evidence needed to discard theories based on some unique feature of an oxygen 2p band, a x band, or overlapping bands. The central question now for the cuprate...
