Instrumental Interface. Gc/fdr instmmentation has developed around two different types of interfacing. The most common is the on-the-fly or flow cell interface in which gc effluent is dkected into a gold-coated cell or light pipe where the sample is subjected to infrared radiation (see Infrared and raman spectroscopy). Infrared transparent windows, usually made of potassium bromide, are fastened to the ends of the flow cell and the radiation is then dkected to a detector having a very fast response-time. In this light pipe type of interface, infrared spectra are generated by ratioing reference scans obtained when only carrier gas is in the cell to sample scans when a gc peak appears. [Pg.402]

EPDM is by far the most widely used material in the ballasted roofing system constmction. Because of EPDM s flexibiHty, very large sheets of up to 10,000 square feet (929 m ) can be deHvered to the job site in compact roUs that offer reduced labor on the roof in the seaming process. The typical EPDM sheet size used in ballasted systems is 12 by 30 m and 1.1 mm thick. EPDM is also widely used in both the fully adhered and mechanically fastened roofing systems. In these constmctions, both 1.1- and 1.5-mm thick material is used with widths from 2.1 to 15 m. A majority of the installations use nonreinforced sheet, although reinforced membrane can also be used in all of the system types. The majority of the reinforced sheets go into mechanically fastened systems. [Pg.213]

Local repair of delamination originally caused by non-durable surface treatment is only temporarily successful at best. The surface treatment on the unrepaired portion of the assembly remains susceptible to attack and the area of delamination will likely continue to grow once the assembly is put back into service and exposed to moist conditions. Replacement or complete remanufacture of the component is the only way to permanently address this type of damage. However, time-limited repairs using bonded or mechanical methods can be used to extend the life of the component until a major overhaul is scheduled. In some cases such as widespread disbond of fuselage doublers, mechanical repairs (rivets and fastened doublers) and continued inspection are used to extend the life of the skin indefinitely because of the high cost of replacement. [Pg.1173]

Evaporators, Horizontal-Tube Type - The basic horizontal-tube evaporator is illustrated in Figure 12. The body of this evaporator is the liquor compartment and is in the form of a vertical cylinder. It is closed, top and bottom, with dished heads, although the bottom may be conical. The lower body ring is provided on opposite sides with steam compartments, closed on the outside by cover plates and on the inside by tube sheets. Between these tube sheets are fastened a number of horizontal tubes. The two steam chests with their connecting mbes form the steam compartment, and the tube wall heating surface. Steam is introduced into one steam chest and as it flows through the tubes it washes non-condensed gases and condensate ahead of it, so that these are withdrawn from the opposite steam chest. [Pg.104]

Physisorption occurs when, as a result of energy differences and/or electrical attractive forces (weak van der Waals forces), the adsorbate molecules become physically fastened to the adsorbent molecules. This type of adsorption is multilayered that is, each molecular layer forms on top of the previous layer with the number of layers being proportional to the contaminant concentration. More molecular layers form with higher concentrations of contaminant in solution. When a chemical compound is produced by the reaction between the adsorbed molecule and the adsorbent, chemisorption occurs. The type of sprocket to be used depends entirely upon local or load conditions. The steel plate without hubs is the cheapest and is furnished for bolting to suitable hubs or flanges. The cast-iron or steel type fitted with hubs is made for direct mounting upon shaft and is fastened in place by either keys or setscrews or a combination of both. The split type is almost a necessity when the hub is mounted on a shaft with other pulleys or sheaves. Its construction facilitates installation and removal, but because of its extra cost it is usually not recommended except when solid hubs cannot be installed. The double-duty sprockets are made with steel rims or plates that may be removed or replaced without disturbing the hub, shaft, bearing, etc. Plates and hubs can be obtained either solid or split. They are particularly adapted for jobs requiring changing of drive ratios or where replacements must be made quickly. [Pg.443]

Water and brine pumps may be isolated with flexible connectors. For small-bore pipes, these can be ordinary reinforced rubber hose, suitably fastened at each end. For larger pipes, corrugated or bellows connectors of various types can be obtained. In all cases, the main pipe must be securely fixed close to the connector, so that the latter absorbs all the vibration. Flexible connectors for the refrigerant usually take the form of corrugated metal hose, wrapped and braided. They should be placed as close to the compressor as possible. [Pg.136]

All mechanical doors are required by law to be capable of hand operation in the event of power failure, and doors of all types must have fastenings which can be opened from either side in case an operator is shut in the store. Targer rooms must have an escape door or breakout hatch or panel at the end remote from the doors, for use in an emergency.
