Sharkskin occurs at a lower shear rate than melt fracture, but the term melt fracture is often applied to all regular flow defects including sharkskin. Thermal conductivity of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is presented in Fig. 12. The solid-state thermal conductivity is observed to decrease with increasing temperature, due mainly to the breakdown of the crystalline structure accompanied by a sharp transition at the melting temperature. Melt temperature—melt temperature is the actual, measured temperature of a molten plastic. Most thermoplastics are processed under a combination of heat and pressure, and as they soften with the application of heat, they can also be formed with the application of pressure. Semicrystalline materials typically need to be processed with a melt temperature above the T, whereas amorphous materials can typically be processed over a range of temperatures and pressures (as long as the temperature is above Tg). Most resin suppliers provide recommendations for melt temperature for the resins they sell. [Pg.68]
