The p crystalline form of poly(e-caprolactame) (nylon 6), obtained in melt spun fibers rapidly cooled to room temperature [24,170] or by quenching the melt [23], is a solid mesophase, which, at variance with the form II of l,4-tra s-poly(l,3-butadiene), is metastable. The amount of disorder in the mesomorphic p form of nylon 6 is indeed related to the history of the sample, whereby non-equilibrium situations are kinetically frozen at room temperature the form transforms into the more stable a and/or y forms by annealing at temperatures higher than room temperature and this transformation is irreversible [171],... [Pg.25]
