Resistance mechanical

We have already noted that the support provides mechanical resistance to the filtration medium, so this characteristic must be determined. [Pg.136]

Besides the material based characteristics, the difference of density of the used particle/substrate combination is a very important criterion. The difference of density influences the contrast of the radiographic tests. Tungsten carbides were used as mechanically resistant particles and titanium based alloys as substrate. The substrate material is marked by an advantageous relation of strength to density. This material is often used in aeronautics, astronautics, and for modification of boundary layers. The density of tungsten carbide (15.7 g/cm ) is about 3.5 times higher than the density of titanium (4.45-4.6 g/cm ). [Pg.543]

Polymer cable anodes are made of a conducting, stabilized and modified plastic in which graphite is incorporated as the conducting material. A copper cable core serves as the means of current lead. The anode formed by the cable is flexible, mechanically resistant and chemically stable. The cable anodes have an external diameter of 12.7 mm. The cross-section of the internal copper cable is 11.4 mm and its resistance per unit length R is consequently 2 mQ m l The maximum current delivery per meter of cable is about 20 mA for a service life of 10 years. This corresponds to a current density of about 0.7 A m. Using petroleum coke as a backfill material allows a higher current density of up to a factor of four. [Pg.217]

PET, PTT, and PBT have similar molecular structure and general properties and find similar applications as engineering thermoplastic polymers in fibers, films, and solid-state molding resins. PEN is significantly superior in terms of thermal and mechanical resistance and barrier properties. The thermal properties of aromatic-aliphatic polyesters are summarized in Table 2.6 and are discussed above (Section 2.2.1.1). [Pg.44]

The DC plasma furnace was designed in the Technical University of Lodz and applied to treat the ash samples with high degree of flexibility [7]. The process of plasma vitrification of ash and slag ends in a chemically stable (Table 3) and mechanically resistant product [8,9], which is safe to store or it can be used as constructional material even in the form of bricks or roof tiles. [Pg.103]

So, the PVA/poly(sodium styrene sulphonate) [PSSNa] blend was obtained by casting aqueous solution of polymers mixture (PVA with Mw= 124,000-186,000 and HD=99% and PSSNa with Mw= 70,000). The resulted films were crosslinked with 1,2-dibromethane in gaseous phase. A semi-interpenetrating network (SIPN) in which polyelectrolyte (PSSNa) chains are trapped inside a based PVA network was obtained [44], A totally miscible blend with a very good film clarity and high mechanical resistance [44] resulted. [Pg.144]

The other mechanism responsible for unstable spinning is the mechanical resistance of a viscoelastic material to rapid deformation. It is a well-known fact that increased yam breaks can be a consequence of spinning speed, which relates to prolonged relaxation time and therefore to break. The fracture can be observed at a maximum extent of deformation under distortion of the covalent bonds. [Pg.453]

Three main routes exist for the spread of cancer cells throughout the body. These involve the lymphatic system, the blood system, and direct extension into body cavities. Spread by the lymphatic system is thought to be important for carcinomas. The walls of these channels offer little mechanical resistance to penetration by tumor cells. Malignant cells readily invade the walls of these vessels and are carried to regional lymph nodes. In the lymph node, the cancer cells can arrest, proliferate and produce a metastatic tumor. Malignant cells may later detach from the lymph node and be carried in the bloodstream to other sites throughout the body. [Pg.137]

For street furniture, it is necessary to provide a greater mechanical resistance (vandalism, intensive use, safety of fixings) and, possibly, fire resistance. [Pg.146]

On the other hand, it is necessary to be aware of the ageing, mechanical resistance and thermomechanical behaviour, which are different from those of metals. The recycling of plastics presents some difficulties that are not generally solved in a satisfactory way. [Pg.833]

Non-ionic polymers have also been blended with ionic block copolymers. Poly(vinyl phosphanate)-l7-polystyrene and PS-l -SPS have been blended with PPO. In both cases, improvements were seen in MeOH permeability over that of fhe unmodified block copolymers and conductivity values dropped as a function of increasing PPO confenf. PVDF has been blended wifh SEES in order fo improve its mechanical and chemical stability, but aggregation was found fo be a problem due fo incompafibility between components. However, it was found that a small amount (2 wt%) of a methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate-methyl methacrylate block copolymer as com-patibilizer not only led to greater homogeneity but also improved mechanical resistance, water management, and conductivity. ... [Pg.162]

Inorganic membranes employed in reaction/transport studies were either in tubular form (a single membrane tube incorporating an inner tube side and an outer shell side in double pipe configuration or as multichannel monolith) or plate-shaped disks as shown in Figure 7.1 (Shinji et al. 1982, Zaspalis et al. 1990, Cussler 1988). For increased mechanical resistance the thin porous (usually mesoporous) membrane layers are usually supported on top of macroporous supports (pores 1-lS /im), very often via an intermediate porous layer, with pore size 100-1500 nm, (Keizer and Burggraaf 1988). [Pg.118]

Porous ceramic membrane layers are formed on top of macroporous supports, for enhanced mechanical resistance. The flow through the support may consist of contributions due to both Knudsen-diffusion and convective nonseparative flow. Supports with large pores are preferred due to their low resistance to the flow. Supports with high resistance to the flow decrease the effective pressure drop over the membrane separation layer, thus diminishing the separation efficiency of the membrane (van Vuren et al. 1987). For this reason in a membrane reactor it is more effective to place the reaction (catalytic) zone at the top layer side of the membrane while purging at the support side of the membrane. [Pg.134]

Shimizu et al. has developed a low-cost MgO porous particle separator, which possessed both the high porosity ( 85%) of the BN felt and the high mechanical resistance of powder separators. The separator was prepared by loosely sintering fine MgO powder with Mg(NOs)2 as the binder. The particles thus formed showed excellent performance as separators in Li—Al/FeS r cells. [Pg.206]

Small amounts of other compounds can be added to Ni-based catalysts to improve the functional characteristics of the final catalyst. Typically, they are calcium aluminate to enhance the mechanical resistance of the catalyst pellets, potassium oxide to improve the resistance to coke formation and silica to form a stable silicate with potassium oxide [34]. Promotion with rare earth oxides such as La2C>3 also results in enhanced resistance to coking. [Pg.294]
