Porosity, high

Carbonate rocks are more frequently fractured than sandstones. In many cases open fractures in carbonate reservoirs provide high porosity / high permeability path ways for hydrocarbon production. The fractures will be continuously re-charged from the tight (low permeable) rock matrix. During field development, wells need to be planned to intersect as many natural fractures as possible, e.g. by drilling horizontal wells. 

Compaction occurs when continuous sedimentation results in an increase of overburden which expels pore water from a sediment package. Pore space will be reduced and the grains will become packed more tightly together. Compaction is particularly severe in clays which have an extremely high porosity of some 80% when freshly deposited. 

The sonic tool measures the time taken for a sound wave to pass through the formation. Sound waves travel in high density (i.e. low porosity) formation faster than in low density (high porosity) formation. The porosity can be determined by measuring the transit time for the sound wave to travel between a transmitter and receiver, provided the rock matrix and fluid are known. 

Duolite A-7 2.2 1.12 Phenolic type resin. High porosity and hydrophilic matrix. pH range is 0 to 6. 

Thus, the porosity of an aerogel is ia excess of 90% and can be as high as 99.9%. As a consequence of such a high porosity, aerogels have large internal surface area and pore volume. 

Soft-burned lime is a quicklime that is calcined at a relatively low temperature. It is characterized by high porosity and chemical reactivity.

The high porosity (compared with a porosity of 0.38 for randomly packed uniform spheres and 0.2 to 0.3 for a typical filter cake) is indicative of its filter-aid ability Different methods of processing the crude diatomite result in a series of filter aids having a wide range of permeability. 

Either low- or high-porosity-solids-phase concentrations can he formed in the purification and melting zones. End-fed units are characterized by low-porosity-solids packing in the purification and melting zones. 

The additive should provide a thin layer of solids having high porosity (0.85 to 0.90) over the filter medium s external surface. Suspension particles will ideally form a layered cake over the filter aid cake layer. The high porosity of the filter aid layer will ensure a high filtration rate. Porosity is not determined by pore size alone. High porosity is still possible with small size pores.

The microsol scale technique is used to weigh a shale sample out of and in water, thus giving weight and volume. The results are plotted versus depth. Low shale densities (high porosity filled with water) indicate overpressured zone. A demonstration example is shown in Figure 4-336. 

Neutron. The neutron porosity values recorded with most tools match closely the wireline thermal neutron logs in the lower porosity ranges (under 25 porosity units). In high porosity zones, the LWD neutron porosities lie between thermal and epithermal wireline values. 

Two types of the homopolymer are available, the flexible and the rigid. Both types have excellent chemical and abrasion resistance. The flexible types are produced with high porosity to permit plasticizer absorption. Articles made from the rigid type are hard and cannot be stretched more than 40% of their original length. An important property of PVC is that it is self-extinguishing due to presence of the chlorine atom. 

A petroleum coke with round grains is available specifically for borehole cathodic protection applications The round grains ensure high porosity and enable gas to escape, allowing the coke to sink to the base of the borehole. This material hjis a higher bulk density than petroleum coke (1 185 kgm" ) which enables it to sink to the bottom of the borehole, yet a lower fixed carbon content (93%), with higher ash (2-06%) and sulphur (5-3%) contents. The resistivity of this material is quoted as 0-1 ohmm.
