In the preparation of many solid state reference materials, reduction of the grain size plays an important role. Usually this reduction is required because of the measurement methods to be used both in the projects and later by the users of the reference material, as well as to come to an acceptable minimum sample intake. The minimum sample intake can be defined as the minimum amount of material needed, so that the heterogeneity of the material does not affect the repeatability of the measurement method. The reduction of the grain size is usually implemented by crushing and/or grinding techniques. The techniques employed and the equipment used must be suitable for the purpose of processing the material. Potential problems of contamination, loss of volatile components, and/or other physical and... [Pg.12]

Pollution prevention in the U.S., whether through source material reduction/reuse, or waste recycling, is practiced in various sectors of the nonferrous metals industry. There are three basic types of semiconductor materials depending on their ability to conduct hole (p-type), electrons (n-type), or both (ambipo-lar) under different gate bias conditions. In semiconductor materials, reduction of the bandgap (Eg) will enhance the thermal population of the conduction band and thus increase the number of intrinsic charge carriers. The decrease of Eg can led to true organic metals showing intrinsic electrical conductivity. [Pg.233]

The application areas of bimodal polyethylenes are the same as for corresponding uni-modal resins. However, improved product property combinations, such as stiffness-impact balance, result in products with higher performance. For example, without bimodal polyethylene and control over the MWD and comonomer incorporation, development of HDPE pipe materials with higher pressure classification would not have been possible [15, 16]. Another new opportunity is material reduction (source reduction) without compromising the properties of the ready-made plastic products. Depending on the end use, e.g. in film application a thickness reduction of 10-30% is possible. [Pg.23]

Hydrogen reduction of Pt (II, IV)/CNM yields a pyrophoric forms, which are unsuitable for use in fuel cells. These materials reduction by BH4, N2H62+, NH2OH or its salts generate boride or nitride forms required hydrogen activation and, as stated above, are unsuitable for use in fuel cells. [Pg.217]

In set style yoghurt, the cross-linking of the caseins can be exploited to increase the firmness or, in stirred yoghurt, to raise the viscosity level (Figure 19.25). Also shown is the increase in the degree of polymerisation ADP as compared to untreated milk. It is notable that the viscosity level is considerably enhanced by the Tg cross-linking reaction. While for untreated milk a viscosity level of 0.07 Pas can be obtained at a protein concentration of 4.9%, the same viscosity was measured for the Tg treated milk at 3.6%, that is, a very costly increase in protein level can be avoided and a considerable raw material reduction of 1.3% protein, equivalent to about 3.6% milk dry matter, can possibly be achieved. [Pg.459]

With a 1° or 2° amine as starting material, reductive amination is used to prepare 2° and 3° amines, respectively. Note the result Reductive amination uses an aldehyde or ketone to replace one H atom on a nitrogen atom by an alkyl group, making a more substituted amine. [Pg.963]

Preparation of MejC by Adsorption of Metal Hydroxide Ammoniates This method requires an excess of ion-exchange groups compared to the number of the supported metal ions and thus relies on the utilization of oxidized carbon materials. Reduction of adsorbed precursors in H2 at 100-300 °C results in the generation of very fine metal particles, their size being 1.5-2.5nm for... [Pg.448]

Pyrrole, thiophene and their derivatives can be oxidatively polymerised, either electrochemically or chemically, for example using iron(lll) chloride, to give mainly 2,5-coupled polymers. The initial neutral polymers are non-conducting, but on further oxidation are converted partially into cation radicals or dications, with incorporation of counter ions from the reaction medium - a process known as doping - giving conducting materials. Reductive doping is also possible in other systems. [Pg.625]

Electrogenerated radicals can also react with other active electrode materials. Reduction of allyl bromide at a tin cathode, or ethyl bromide at lead affords the corresponding organometallic tin or lead compounds in 75% or 90% yield, respectively [177]. The anodic oxidation of ethyl magnesium bromide also generates ethyl radicals that can be trapped at a lead anode. This reaction is the basis of the NALCO process, which until recently has been used to produce tetraethyllead in a technical scale [178]. [Pg.288]

This project will identify the constraints that prevent existing fuel processors from reaching rated capacity in 30 seconds or less. A fundamental technical barrier is the thermal mass of the catalysts and stmctural materials. Reductions in thermal mass require improvements in catalyst materials and effective heat transfer. Other limiting factors are related to auxiliary equipment and process design, such as available gas blowers and burners, the fuel injection system, sensor response, and hot gas distribution within the processor. [Pg.310]
