For work with the method of x-ray diffraction two items were necessary to study the theory and to learn to work with x-rays. So Mark studied together with Weissenberg Niggli s book on crystallography thoroughly. To work with soft x-rays, as it is necessary for diffraction work, was rather difficult at those times. In 1930, R. Wierl and Mark studied N. Davidson and J. Germer s experiments on electron diffraction. Employing their wide experience in instrumentation, they promptly constructed an improved electron scattering apparatus. With this instrument, they determined the interatomic distances in a number of molecules and published a series of papers on the technique and their findings (17, 18, 19). Mark s contributions to the field of crystal structure are discussed in a later chapter of this volume and will not be covered in more detail here (see Pauling, L. Human gene transfer experiments in lymphocyte marking studies began in 1989. These early studies showed that gene transfer was feasible and could be well tolerated although there was no demonstrable therapeutic benefit. Rate effects may not be chemical kinetic ones. Benson and co-worker [84], in a study of the rate of adsorption of water on lyophilized proteins, comment that the empirical rates of adsorption were very markedly complicated by the fact that the samples were appreciably heated by the heat evolved on adsorption. More recently, studies employing STM have been able to address surface self-diffiision across a terrace [16, 17. 18 and 19], It is possible to image the same area on a surface as a fiinction of time, and watch the movement of individual atoms. These studies are limited only by the speed of the instrument. Note that the performance of STM instruments is constantly improving, and has now surpassed the 1 ps time resolution mark [20]. Diflfiisive processes nonnally operate in chemical systems so as to disperse concentration gradients. In a paper in 1952, the mathematician Alan Turing produced a remarkable prediction [37] that if selective diffiision were coupled with chemical feedback, the opposite situation may arise, with a spontaneous development of sustained spatial distributions of species concentrations from initially unifonn systems. Turmg s paper was set in the context of the development of fonn (morphogenesis) in embryos, and has been adopted in some studies of animal coat markings.
