Lead-acid batteries received a high score by virtue of being a commercial product with an established recycling infrastructure. Nickel/metal hydride and nickel/cadmium are also widely available commercially and are routinely recycled. Zinc batteries are sold in large quantities and little or no hazardous waste and pollutants are produced by processing. Most of the battery technologies farther down the list are ranked lower because the batteries are not commercial products and recycling processes are not developed any further than a bench scale. In the case of sodium/sulflir batteries, the market outlook for recovered products is unfavorable.

The market outlook appears to be particularly favomable for microvalves, driven by piezoelectric bending transducers or thermal principles. Such devices are already being produced and sold by several companies. The possible applications of these valves will increase when they can be mass-produced inexpensively and operated with very low power consmnption. Stimulus can be expected particularly from valves with 3/2-way functionahty, to be introduced as pilot valves in many areas of automation. 

In his 1962 review, Hergert also considered the heartwood flavonoids from the viewpoint of their potential economic value to humans. There is no doubt that certain woods or barks are superlative sources of flavonoid materials such as quercetin, rutin, or dihydroquercetin. These may be used as such or converted simply to more marketable products. Rutin continues to be used widely as a medicinal plant product, although its efficacy is still a matter of debate. Fortunately, there is a resurgence of interest in flavonoids as potential curative agents in humans, and more determined efforts are being made to submit these products to proper clinical trial. There is also current interest in flavonoids as flavor potentiators in the food industry. Thus, the market outlook for heartwood flavonoids would seem to be more favorable today than it was in 1962.
