Manufacturing surface coatings

Almost all of the OX that is recovered is used to produce phthaUc anhydride. PhthaUc anhydride is a basic building block for plasticizers used in flexible PVC resins, for polyester resins used in glass-reinforced plastics, and for alkyd resins used for surface coatings. OX is also used to manufacture phthalonitrile, which is converted to copper phthalocyanine, a pigment. [Pg.424]

Tetrasodium hexakiscyanoferrate decahydrate [14434-22-1], Na4[Fe(CN)g] IOH2O, or yellow pmssiate of soda, forms yellow monoclinic crystals that are soluble in water but insoluble in alcohol. It is slightly efflorescent at room temperature, but the anhydrous material, tetrasodium hexakiscyanoferrate [13601 -19-9], Na4[Fe(CN)J, is obtained at 100°C. The decahydrate is produced from calcium cyanide, iron(II) sulfate, and sodium carbonate in a process similar to that for the production of K4[Fe(CN)g] 3H2O. It is used in the manufacture of trisodium hexakiscyanoferrate, black and blue dyes, as a metal surface coating, and in photographic processing. [Pg.434]

Chlorinated paraffins with the general molecular formula x 2x-y+2) have been manufactured on a commercial basis for over 50 years. The early products were based on paraffin wax feedstocks and were used as fine retardants and plasticizers in surface coatings and textile treatments and as extreme pressure—antiwear additives in lubricants. The development of chlorinated paraffins into new and emerging technologies was constrained principally because of the limitations of grades based on paraffin wax and the lack of suitable alternative feedstocks to meet the demands of the new potential markets. [Pg.41]

Initially, knowledge of the process is required. It is assumed that the component is free m defects, e.g. porosity, as this will affect surface integrity, and free from residual stresses caused by any previous manufacturing process. There is also a risk in the reduction of component fatigue life associated with some surface coating processes. The compatibility between mating surfaces in service must also be addressed because of possible galvanic corrosion failure... [Pg.51]

Melamine (I,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-triazine) was first prepared by Liebig in 1835. For a hundred years the material remained no more than a laboratory curiosity until Henkel patented the production of resins by condensation with formaldehyde. Today large quantities of melamine-formaldehyde resins are used in the manufacture of moulding compositions, laminates, adhesives, surface coatings and other applications. Although in many respects superior in properties to the urea-based resins they are also significantly more expensive. [Pg.680]

In modem manufacturing methods the oil is sometimes reacted directly with the glycerol to form a monoglyceride and this is then reacted with the acid to form the alkyd resin. When the resulting surface coating is applied to the substrate the molecules are substantially linear. However, in the presence of certain driers such as lead soaps there is oxidative cross-linking via the unsaturated group in the side chain and the resin hardens. [Pg.741]

Today the most important applications are in surface coatings, including some use as French polish, as adhesives and cements, including valve capping and optical cements, for playing card finishes and for floor polishes. The material also continues to be used for hat stiffening and in the manufacture of sealing wax. [Pg.870]

Red lead (Pb304) is manufactured on the 20000-tonne scale annually and is used primarily as a surface coating to prevent corrosion of iron and steel (check oxidation-reduction potentials). It is also used in the production of leaded glasses and ceramic glazes and. very substantially, as an activator, vulcanizing agent and pigment in natural and artificial rubbers and plastics. [Pg.386]

Its major use is in the manufacture of paint, and other important uses are as a surface coating on paper and as a filler in rubber and plastics. [Pg.959]

The impacts of TSCA, such as those on two specific exemplary industries, surface coating polymers and metal-cutting fluids, by S.Oslosky and H.Fribush, respectively, are implied but actually not explicit within TSCA. Consider the required assessment of risks, the need for test-data describing effects on health and the environment, aside from plant inspections, subpoenas, prohibited acts, penalties for prohibited acts, enforcement and seizure, judicial review, citizens civil actions and petitions, and employee protection provisions in the Act. Thus, it s inevitable that the alert manufacturer will adjust his product research, development and selection processes to identify and use substances with reduced risk to health and the environment wherever possible. As structure-(biological)-activity relationships become more reliable, the alert... [Pg.4]

The effects of size surface area, shape, purity method of synthesis, charge, surface coating, functionalized groups, and aggregation need to be carefully considered when assessing potential risks of CNT toxicity. Toxicology studies on CNTs should be accompanied by improved control in manufacturing and improved analysis before CNTs can be successfully used for pharmaceutical applications. [Pg.305]

Together, antifreeze, PET, and polyester polymers account for about 98% of the ethylene glycol produced in the United States. It is also used sometimes as a deicer for aircraft surfaces. The two hydroxyl groups in the EG molecule also make EG suitable for the manufacture of surfactants and in latex paints. Other applications include hydraulic brake fluid, the manufacture of alkyd resins for surface coatings, and stabilizers for water dispersions of urea-formaldehyde and melamine-formaldehyde The hygroscopic properties (absorbs moisture from the air) make EG useful as a humectant for textile fibers, paper, leather, and adhesives treatment. [Pg.153]

In evident areas of bond failure, fireproofing should be removed and the substrate should be thoroughly cleaned and properly primed before new material is applied. If surface coating is required to prevent moisture from penetrating, it should be renewed at intervals recommended by the manufacturer. The previously listed inspections should be completed prior to renewal of coating so that defects are not hidden by the coating. [Pg.358]
