PROPENE The major use of propene is in the produc tion of polypropylene Two other propene derived organic chemicals acrylonitrile and propylene oxide are also starting materials for polymer synthesis Acrylonitrile is used to make acrylic fibers (see Table 6 5) and propylene oxide is one component in the preparation of polyurethane polymers Cumene itself has no direct uses but rather serves as the starting material in a process that yields two valuable indus trial chemicals acetone and phenol... [Pg.269]

Com oil s flavor, color, stabiHty, retained clarity at refrigerator temperatures, polyunsaturated fatty acid composition, and vitamin E content make it a premium vegetable oil. The major uses are frying or salad appHcations (50%) and margarine formulations (35%). [Pg.360]

Much of the chloroacetyl chloride produced is used captively as a reactive intermediate. It is useful in many acylation reactions and in the production of adrenalin [51-43-4] diazepam [439-15-5] chloroacetophenone [532-27-4] chloroacetate esters, and chloroacetic anhydride [541-88-8]. A major use is in the production of chloroacetamide herbicides (3) such as alachlor [15972-60-8]. [Pg.89]

Ma.nufa.cture. Butenediol is manufactured by partial hydrogenation of butynediol. Although suitable conditions can lead to either cis or trans isomers (111), the commercial product contains almost exclusively iVj -2-butene-l,4-diol Trans isomer, available at one time by hydrolysis of l,4-dichloro-2-butene, is unsuitable for the major uses of butenediol involving Diels-Alder reactions. The Hquid-phase heat of hydrogenation of butynediol to butenediol is 156 kj/mol (37.28 kcal/mol) (112). [Pg.107]

The major use of vinylpyrrohdinone is as a monomer in manufacture of poly(vinylpyrrohdinone) (PVP) homopolymer and in various copolymers, where it frequendy imparts hydrophilic properties. When PVP was first produced, its principal use was as a blood plasma substitute and extender, a use no longer sanctioned. These polymers are used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic appHcations, soft contact lenses, and viscosity index improvers. The monomer serves as a component in radiation-cured polymer compositions, serving as a reactive diluent that reduces viscosity and increases cross-linking rates (see... [Pg.114]

The significance of industrial acrolein production may be clearer if one considers the two major uses of acrolein—direct oxidation to acryUc acid and reaction to produce methionine via 3-methyhnercaptopropionaldehyde. In acryUc acid production, acrolein is not isolated from the intermediate production stream. The 1990 acryUc acid production demand in the United States alone accounted for more than 450,000 t/yr (28), with worldwide capacity approaching 1,470,000 t/yr (29). Approximately 0.75 kg of acrolein is required to produce one kilogram of acryUc acid. The methionine production process involves the reaction of acrolein with methyl mercaptan. Worldwide methionine production was estimated at about 170,000 t/yr in 1990 (30). (See Acrylic ACID AND DERIVATIVES AmINO ACIDS, SURVEY.)... [Pg.124]

The detergent range alcohols and their derivatives have a wide variety of uses ia consumer and iadustrial products either because of surface-active properties, or as a means of iatroduciag a long chain moiety iato a chemical compound. The major use is as surfactants (qv) ia detergents and cleaning products. Only a small amount of the alcohol is used as-is rather most is used as derivatives such as the poly(oxyethylene) ethers and the sulfated ethers, the alkyl sulfates, and the esters of other acids, eg, phosphoric acid and monocarboxyhc and dicarboxyhc acids. Major use areas are given ia Table 11. [Pg.449]

Titanium Tetrachloride. The major use for titanium tetrachloride [7550 5-0] is in titanium dioxide production, and titanium dioxide [13463-67-7] is enjoying strong growth for use as a filler in pulp and paper manufacture and as a pigment in paint and plastic manufacture. Annual growth for this product is forecasted at between 2.5 and 3.0% through 1992. [Pg.517]

The major use of alkan olamines in agricultural products is as a neutralizer for acidic herbicides. They also contribute increased water solubiUty, reduced volatility, and more uniform solutions. Various ethan olamines are reported in formulations to improve potato tuber size (219) and enhance the resistance to salt of some crops (220). [Pg.11]

Up until 1986 the major use for 2-j -butylphenol was in the production of the herbicide, 2-j -butyl-4,6-dinitrophenol [88-85-7] which was used as a pre- and postemergent herbicide and as a defoHant for potatoes (30). The EPA banned its use in October 1986 based on a European study which showed that workers who came in contact with 2-j -butyl-4,6-dinitrophenol experienced an abnormally high rate of reproduction problems. Erance and the Netherlands followed with a ban in 1991. A significant volume of 2-j -butyl-4,6-dinitrophenol is used worldwide as a polymerization inhibitor in the production of styrene where it is added to the reboiler of the styrene distillation tower to prevent the formation of polystyrene (31). OSBP is used in the Par East as the carbamate derivative, 2-j -butylphenyl-Ai-methylcarbamate [3766-81-2] (BPMC) (32). BPMC is an insecticide used against leaf hoppers which affect the rice fields. [Pg.66]

The major use of 4-cumylphenol is as a chain terminator for polycarbonates. Its use in place of phenol gives a polycarbonate with superior properties (33). Eor a low molecular weight polycarbonate used for injection-molding appHcations, the use of 4-cumylphenol as a chain terminator significantly lowers the volatiHty of the resin. Other uses of 4-cumylphenol include the production of phenoHc resins, some of which have appHcations in the electronics industry (34). Another appHcation of 4-cumylphenol involves its reaction with ethylene oxide to form a specialty surfactant. [Pg.66]

The major use of technical grade 4-dodecylphenol is in lube oil additives. 4-Dodecylphenol is converted to a calcium phenolate [50910-68-4] and... [Pg.66]

A major use for 2,4-di-/ f2 -amylphenol is in the production of uv stabilizers the principal one is a benzotriazole-based uv absorber, 2-(2 -hydroxy-3, 5 -di-/ f2 -amylphenyl)-5-chlorobenzotriazole [25973-55-17, which is widely used in polyolefin films, outdoor furniture, and clear coat automotive finishes (56). Another significant use for 2,4-di-/ f2 -amylphenol is in the photographic iadustry. A number of phenoxyacetic acid derivatives of... [Pg.68]

The major uses of aniline are in the manufacture of polymers, mbber, agricultural chemicals, dyes and pigments, pharmaceuticals, and photographic chemicals. Approximately 67% of the wodd production of aniline is used in the manufacture of rigid polyurethanes and reaction-injection-molded (RIM) parts for the constmction, automotive, and durable goods industries. [Pg.233]

The major use of this compound is in the production of mordant and acid dyes. 2-Amino-4-nitropheno1 also has found limited use as an antioxidant and light stabilizer in butyl mbbers and as a catalyst in the manufacture of hexadiene. The compound has been shown to be a skin irritant and continuous exposure should be avoided. Toxicological studies indicate that it is nonaccumulative (162). [Pg.313]

The U.S. Food and Dmg Administration (FDA) has affirmed the status of beeswax as Generally Recognised as Safe (GRAS) (5) in Tide 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Section 184.1973 (21 CFR 184.1973). The major use of beeswax is in the cosmetic industry, with smaller amounts used in pharmaceuticals and candle production. [Pg.314]

Differences among the processes have a major impact on the use of the products. Products from a particular process or manufacturer may dominate one market, while products from a different process may be preferred in a different appHcation. Major uses include hot-melt adhesives for appHcations requiring high temperature performance, additives to improve the processing of plastics, sHp and mb additives for inks and paints, and cosmetic appHcations. [Pg.317]

Some of the other major uses of direct rotaiy kilns are in the following processes ... [Pg.1206]

Diafiltration If a batch process is run so that the permeate is replaced by an equal volume of fresh solvent, unretained solutes are flushed through the system more efficiently. A major use of UF is fractionation, where a solvent, a retained solute and an unretained solute are present. An example is whey, containing water, protein, and lactose. If the retention of protein is I and the retention of lactose is 0, the concentration of protein in the retentate rises during UF. The ratio of protein to lac tose rises, but the feed concentration of lactose is unchanged in retentate and permeate. Diafiltration dilutes the feed, and permits the concentration of lactose to be reduced. Diafiltration is used to produce high-purity products, and is used to fractionate high-value products. R is always 0 for eveiy component. [Pg.2042]

Use of Corrosion Probes The major use of corrosion monitoring probes is to measure the corrosion rate in the plant or the field. In addition to corrosion-rate measurements, corrosion probes can be used to detect process upsets that may change the corrosion resistance of the equipment of interest. This is usually equally as important a measurement as corrosion rate since a change in the process conditions can lead to dramatic changes in the corrosion rate. [Pg.2440]

One of the major uses of molecular simulation is to provide useful theoretical interpretation of experimental data. Before the advent of simulation this had to be done by directly comparing experiment with analytical (mathematical) models. The analytical approach has the advantage of simplicity, in that the models are derived from first principles with only a few, if any, adjustable parameters. However, the chemical complexity of biological systems often precludes the direct application of meaningful analytical models or leads to the situation where more than one model can be invoked to explain the same experimental data. [Pg.237]

Cathodoluminescence, CL, involves emission in the UV and visible region and as such is not element specific, since the valence/conduction band electrons are involved in the process. It is therefore sensitive to electronic structure effects and is sensitive to defects, dopants, etc., in electronic materials. Its major use is to map out such regions spatially, using a photomultiplier to detect all emitted light without... [Pg.118]

As stated earlier, the major use of UPS is not for materials analysis purposes but for electronic structure studies. There are analysis capabilities, however. We will consider these in two parts those involving the electron valence energy levels and those involving low-lying core levels accessible to UPS photon energies (including synchrotron sources). Then we will answer the question why use UPS if XPS is available ... [Pg.302]
