Tall oil rosin is a by-product of paper manufacturing. Raw wood chips are digested under heat and pressure with a mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide. Soluble sodium salts of lignin, rosin, and fatty acids are formed, which are removed from the wood pulp as a dark solution. The soaps of the rosin and fatty acids float to the top of the mixture, where they are skimmed off and treated with sulfuric acid to free the rosin and fatty acids. This mixture, known as cmde tall oil (CTO), is refined further to remove color and odor bodies fractional distillation separates the tall oil rosin acids from the fatty acids (see Tall oil). [Pg.138]

Sulfates of sodium are iadustriaUy important materials commonly sold ia three forms (Table 1). In the period from 1970 to 1981, > 1 million metric tons were consumed aimuaHy ia the United States. Siace then, demand has declined. In 1988 consumption dropped to 890,000 t, and ia 1994 to 610,000 t (1,2). Sodium sulfate is used principally (40%) ia the soap (qv) and detergent iadustries. Pulp and paper manufacturers consume 25%, textiles 19%, glass 5%, and miscellaneous iadustries consume 11% (3). About half of all sodium sulfate produced is a synthetic by-product of rayon, dichromate, phenol (qv), or potash (see Chromium compounds Fibers, regenerated cellulosics Potassium compounds). Sodium sulfate made as a by-product is referred to as synthetic. Sodium sulfate made from mirabilite, thenardite, or naturally occurring brine is called natural sodium sulfate. In 1994, about 300,000 t of sodium sulfate were produced as a by-product another 300,000 t were produced from natural sodium sulfate deposits (4). [Pg.203]

Low DS starch acetates have reduced gelatinization temperature ranges and reduced tendency to retrograde after pasting and cooling. Gelling may be completely inhibited if the DS is sufficiently high. Low DS starch acetate polymers also form films which are useful in textile and paper manufacture. [Pg.346]

Expandable VDC copolymer microspheres are prepared by a microsuspension process (191). The expanded microspheres are used in reinforced polyesters, blocking multipair cable, and in composites for furniture, marble, and marine appHcations (192—195). Gypsum board paper is a special three-ply paper manufactured from repulped newspapers. The face paper or cream face has the ply against the core unsized so that the gypsum crystals can grow into it, as this is the principal form of bonding between the core and facers. The middle ply is sized and the outer ply is more heavily sized and treated to control paint absorption. For the completed gypsum board system to work, the joint treatment and paper must absorb paint at the same rate. [Pg.322]
