Cast UPRs without fillers are used in fancy goods and for making buttons. For these apphcations, transparent colorless UPRs are produced. Such UPRs should be resistant to yellowing and discoloration. [Pg.84]

UPRs are apphed as a coating for wood, mainly in furniture manufacturing. For that apphcation, two-component hquid resin systems are formulated. One component contains the peroxide initiator, whereas another one is addi-tivated with a cobalt promoter. For the coating of particle board and other substrates, fast-cimable UPR systems with UV photoinitiators are used. Re- [Pg.84]

The conservation of mass law finds a major application during the performance of pollution-prevention assessments. As described earlier, a pollution-prevention assessment is a systematic, planned procedure with the objective of identifying methods to reduce or ehminate waste. The assessment process should characterize the selected waste streams and processes (Ref. 11)—a necessaiy ingredient if a material balance is to be performed. Some of the data required for the material balance calciilation may be collected during the first review of site-specific data however, in some instances, the information may not be collected until an actual site walk-through is performed. [Pg.2168]

Most petrochemical processes are essentially enclosed and normally vent only a small amount of fugitive emissions. However, the petrochemical processes that use air-oxidation-type reactions normally vent large, continuous amounts of gaseous emissions to the atmosphere (10). Six major petrochemical processes employ reactions using air oxidation. Table 30-5 lists the atmospheric emissions from these processes along with applicable control measures. [Pg.499]

As mentioned in the introduction, hot melts are used wherever process speed is critical. Described below are some of the major applications for hot melt... [Pg.741]

Compression may be from below atmospheric as in a vacuum pump or above atmospheric as for the majority of process applications. The work done by Scheeh - is useful. [Pg.368]

Methods of applying paint today are numerous and it is impossible to list and describe them in detail in a section of this size. Where corrosion resistance of the finished article is a major consideration, it is possible to apply controls to ensure that maximum corrosion protection is obtained from the selected application process. [Pg.571]

Hydrosilation reactions have been one of the earlier techniques utilized in the preparation of siloxane containing block copolymers 22,23). A major application of this method has been in the synthesis of polysiloxane-poly(alkylene oxide) block copolymers 23), which find extensive applications as emulsifiers and stabilizers, especially in the urethane foam formulations 23-43). These types of reactions are conducted between silane (Si H) terminated siloxane oligomers and olefinically terminated poly-(alkylene oxide) oligomers. Consequently the resulting system contains (Si—C) linkages between different segments. Earlier developments in the field have been reviewed 22, 23,43> Recently hydrosilation reactions have been used effectively by Ringsdorf 255) and Finkelmann 256) for the synthesis of various novel thermoplastic liquid crystalline copolymers where siloxanes have been utilized as flexible spacers. Introduction of flexible siloxanes also improved the processibility of these materials. [Pg.46]

Another consequence of the absence of sponataneous transfer and termination reactions is that the polymer chains formed remain living 3), i.e. they carry at the chain end a metal-organic site able to give further reactions. Block copolymer synthesis is probably the major application 12 14), but the preparation of co-functional polymers, some chain extension processes, and the grafting onto reactions arise also directly from the long life time of the active sites. [Pg.148]

These materials are useful semiconductors and have a wide range of industrial applications, particularly in opto-electronics. One of their attractive features is the possibility of tailoring the band gap and the lattice constant in the ternary alloys by varying the composition. CVD is now a major production process of these materials. [Pg.333]

Based on the micro-electronics fabrication process, Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MOEMS) have not yet been used in astronomical instrumentation, but this technology will provide the key to small, low-cost, light, and scientifically efficient instruments, and allow impressive breakthroughs in tomorrow s observational astronomy. Two major applications of MOEMS are foreseen ... [Pg.107]

At present, the major applications of zeolites in catalysis are in the oil refinery. They find increasing application in petrochemical processes. When considering the enormous success of the application of zeolites in bulk chemistry, it is to be expected that the same trend will be seen in fine chemicals production. For this sector, it is fortunate that in bulk chemistry so much development work is being done in catalysis and in particular in zeolite synthesis and application. [Pg.79]

The set of possible dependent properties and independent predictor variables, i.e. the number of possible applications of predictive modelling, is virtually boundless. A major application is in analytical chemistry, specifically the development and application of quantitative predictive calibration models, e.g. for the simultaneous determination of the concentrations of various analytes in a multi-component mixture where one may choose from a large arsenal of spectroscopic methods (e.g. UV, IR, NIR, XRF, NMR). The emerging field of process analysis,... [Pg.349]

The electrostatic separation method is the exclusive choice in some specific situations, for example in the cases of rutile and ilmenite deposits. These deposits generally contain minerals of similar specific gravities and similar surface properties so that processes such as flotation are unsuitable for concentration. The major application of electrostatic separation is in the processing of beach sands and alluvial deposits containing titanium minerals. Almost all the beach sand plants in the world use electrostatic separation to separate rutile and ilmenite from zircon and monazite. In this context the flowsheet given later (see Figure 2.35 A) may be referred to. Electrostatic separation is also used with regard to a number of other minerals. Some reported commercial separations include those of cassiterite from scheelite, wolframite from quartz, cassiterite from columbite, feldspar from quartz and mica, and diamond from heavy associated minerals. Electrostatic separation is also used in industrial waste recovery. [Pg.183]

The field of in situ studies of processes is one of the major applications of scattering methods. So there is continuous effort to extend the scope of applicability. Nevertheless, the user should be aware of the limiting factors. [Pg.53]

Recent developments in microsystems technology have led to the widespread application of microfabrication techniques for the production of sensor platforms. These techniques have had a major impact on the development of so-called Lab-on-a-Chip devices. The major application areas for theses devices are biomedical diagnostics, industrial process monitoring, environmental monitoring, drug discovery, and defence. In the context of biomedical diagnostic applications, for example, such devices are intended to provide quantitative chemical or biochemical information on samples such as blood, sweat and saliva while using minimal sample volume. [Pg.193]

The examples illustrated in the almost 100 schemes in this chapter demonstrate how versatile donor-substituted allenes can be in synthetic processes. The major applications concern addition reactions and cycloadditions to the allenic double bonds, which furnish products with valuable functional groups. Of particular interest are metalations - usually at C-l of the allene unit - followed by reactions with electrophiles that deliver compounds which can often be used for cyclization reactions. A variety of highly substituted and functionalized heterocycles arises from these flexible methods, which cannot be obtained by other reactions. Many of these transformations proceed with good regioselectivity and excellent stereoselection. [Pg.485]

The fluorescence energy transfer process has been widely used to determine the distance between fluorophores, the surface density of fluorophores in the lipid bilayer, and the orientation of membrane protein or protein segments, often with reference to the membrane surface and protein-protein interactions. Membranes are intrinsically dynamic in nature, so that so far the major applications have been the determination of fixed distances between molecules of interest in the membrane. [Pg.249]

Both thermoplastics and thermosets can be used in four of the five major application areas plastics, elastomers, coatings, and adhesives. But, only thermoplastics can be used in making fibers. During the spinning and drawing process of fiber processing, it s necessary to orient the molecules. Only unbranched, linear polymers (not thermosets) are capable of orientation. [Pg.321]
