The effects of extractives on physical properties of wood have not been clarified because this question involves chemistry (especially organic chemistry), physics, and structural dynamics. However, it is well known empirically that wood species containing large amounts of extractives have better durability, dimensional stability, and plasticization for these reasons, extractives-rich woods have been used for construction and fancy goods since ancient times.
