Magnesium sulfonate

These sodium sulfonates or so-called natural sulfonates are transformed into simple or overbase calcium or magnesium sulfonates (Satriana, 1982). 

Examples of such surfactants are detergents which include calcium and magnesium sulfonates (RSOO)2M2+, phenates (RC6H40)2M2+, carboxylates (RCOO )2M2+, phosphonates RPO/M2 and carbonate-sulfonate hard-core reverse micelles (RMs). Ashless dispersants are the most widely used types, such as the substituted polyisobutylene amine succinimides (mono-substituted, m-PIBS and bis-substituted, b-PIBS), succinate esters, Mannich bases, and phosphorus types, see Chapter 2.2 for formulas (Inoue and Watanabe, 1983 Papke and Rubin, 1992 Vipper and Watanabe, 1981). 

TestB Acid neutralization test. The same three field test formulations, identical in every way except for the detergent, were treated with 5 TAN of oleic acid (a weak organic acid) and titrated for TAN by method D664. In addition, the same amount of acid was added to the base oil as a reference. As shown in Table 6.7, the magnesium sulfonate did not reduce the TAN at all over the base oil case. The greatest reduction in TAN was observed with calcium phenate, but calcium sulfonate also provided a meaningful reduction in TAN. This is the same ranking as the TAN increase observed in the field test. 

Test C The used oil lead content analyzed after 32,186 km run from a diesel engine, shown in Table 6.7, indicates that the lead corrosion rate is highest for the magnesium sulfonate containing oil.

In a study by Wicha directed to the synthesis of prostaglandins from the Corey lactone, the use of BFs-EtaO to catalyze the addition of the lithium sulfone anion (470) to aldehydes was demonstrated (equation 109). The use of Lewis acid catalysis results in significantly improved yields for the addition component of the Julia coupling. In this example, the addition of either the lithium or the magnesium sulfone anion proceeded in low yield. With the addition of BF3-Et20, the p-hydroxy sulfone can either be isolated, or directly converted to an alkene in one pot. This sequence was originally developed to deal with the specific problem of a-hydroxy aldehydes, and the difficulty of sulfone anion addition to these adducts. Other problems with addition of the sulfone adduct may be amenable to this solution as well.

Mississippi montmorillonite in the ratio of 10 ml of liquid per gram of clay. The results with the magnesium sulfonate asphalt were precisely opposite those of the magnesium maleate asphalt (see Figure 6). In this series full wet-strength retention was obtained using traprock but not with sand. In all these experiments distilled water was more aggressive than the saline solution, which would tend to indicate that salting of roads in the winter months is less harmful than rainfall. 

Overbase magnesium sulfonates are a transparent colloidal dispersion (0.1 xm or smaller) of magnesium carbonate in oil containing protective colloids, which are usually magnesium derivatives of petroleum sulfonic acids or alkyl benzene sulfonic acids. 

The formation of soap scum in hard water led to a search for synthetic materials that would have the cleansing properties of soap, but would not form scum when they encountered calcium and magnesium ions. Dodecylphenol, in the form of its calcium or magnesium sulfonate, is used as an additive for lubricants. It is produced by the reaction of phenol with propylene tetramer in the molar ratio 3 1 at a temperature of 100 °C on ion-exchange resins. West European production in 1985 was around 20,000t.
