Acidic conditions accelerate ZDDP decomposition and basic barium sulfonate detergents increase the rate of the ZDDP thermal decomposition reaction pathway. ZDDPs have been reported to form complexes with amines and succinimide dispersants (Gallopoulos, 1964 Heilweil, 1969 Rounds, 1976). 

This material is of sufficient purity for most uses, including the conversion to 3,4-dimethylaniline (p. 46). It is reported that the boiling point of the product can be raised slightly (from 211-212° to 214-21S°/760 mm.) by sulfonation, recrystallization of the barium sulfonate, and regeneration of the bromo compound by acid hydrolysis.

Furansulfonic acid176 provides an example Pure furan, b.p. 31.2-31.5°, is prepared from technical furan by way of the maleic anhydride adduct, which is then decomposed at 140 to 150°. This furan is treated with the pyridine-sulfur trioxide adduct in a bomb-tube for 8-10 h at 100°. This product is treated with a paste of barium carbonate in water for 30-40 min, then filtered hot, and concentrated, and the barium sulfonate is precipitated by ethanol. The following yields are obtained from 1.9 g of furan with 4.4 g of pyridine-sulfur trioxide 30%, with 8.8 g 56%, and with 13.4 g 90%, S-Benzylthiouronium 2-furansulfonate melts at 205°.

The progress of a sulfonation reaction can be followed by determining the acidic titer of a given weight of reaction mixture at suitable intervals, since for every mole of sulfonic acid produced the acidity is decreased by one equivalent. If a sulfonation 3rields a mixture of mono-and di-sulfonic acids, neutralization of the diluted reaction mixture with barium hydroxide, filtration of the insoluble barium sulfate, and analysis for barium of a sample of the dried barium sulfonates obtained by evaporation of the filtrate will indicate the composition of the mixture. 

Wax-naphthalene or w y -phenol condensation products and their polymers are said to be effective as pour-point reducers. Viscosity Index may be improved by the addition of butene polymers or polymers of methacrylic acid esters. Detergency additives are usually complex calcium or barium sulfonates or phenates.
