Methyl hexyl carbinol may be made in a pure state by the action of methyl magnesium iodide upon heptaldehyde,1 but it is more easily and cheaply obtained in a state of satisfactory purity for most purposes by the heating of castor oil with sodium hydroxide.2 This gives sodium ricinoleate which upon fusion with caustic soda yields methyl hexyl carbinol. Five HimcEED grams of castor oil (Note i) is added to a solution of lOO g. of potassium hydroxide in i 1. of 95 per cent alcohol. The mixture is placed in a 3-I. flask equipped with a reflux condenser and is boiled for three hours. The solution is then poured into 3 1. of water and acidified by the addition of a solution of 100 cc. of concentrated sulfiuic acid in 300 cc. of water. The acid which separates is washed twice with warm water, shaken intermittently for one hour with 100 g. of anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and then filtered with suction. Unsaturated fatty acid oligomers, such as oligomerised oleic acid, are becoming increasingly available. The reaction occurs between the aqueous solution of MCPBA and the emulsified substrate (Ch. 9, p. 348). A comparison was made with the similar reaction using magnesium monoperoxyphthalate (MMPP), in aqueous ethanol suspensions. In general, MCPBA reacts faster and is more selective and higher yielding than MMPP. Most of the reactions go to completion within a few minutes, while the silent process requires several hours. Excellent selectivities are observed, and terminal olefins can be kept intact in the presence of central ones.
