One thing has not changed. By shopping among the software sources at the end of this book, and clipping popular computer magazine advertisements, the prudent instructor can still equip his or her lab at a starting investment of about 2000 per workstation of two students each.

Cones contain 0.6—4.0 kg of yam. The tip of the cone tube must have a smooth finish to prevent damage to the yam, which is drawn over the top. Again, a magazine wrap may be provided for automatic package transfer. Both compacted and twisted yams are packaged on cones.

In 1933, the first roU coater was installed as an integral part of a paper machine. These on-machine coaters produce a low cost coated paper used largely for magazines. Coating of paper off-machine at speeds greater than paper machine manufacturing speeds is possible with the use of the various available blade coaters (17). 

Novelty searches are not necessarily limited to patent information. The anticipation of a purportedly novel idea can occur in journals, books, magazines, etc. Thus, the potential scope for a novelty search is essentially infinite, and one of the challenges to the searcher is to devise an effective strategy whose cost is commensurate with the potential value of the invention.

Principal Uses. Groundwood pulp contains a considerable proportion (70—80 wt %) of fiber bundles, broken fibers, and fines in addition to the individual fibers. Principal uses of paper-grade pulps are in newsprint, magazine papers including coated pubHcation grades, board for folding and molded cartons, wallpapers, tissue, and other similar products.

Flotation. Flotation (qv) is used alone or in combination with washing and cleaning to deink office paper and mixtures of old newsprint and old magazines (26). An effective flotation process must fulfill four functions. (/) The process must efficiently entrain air. Air bubble diameter is about 1000 p.m. Typically air bubbles occupy 25—60% of the flotation cell volume. Increa sing the airRquid ratio in the flotation cell is said to improve ink removal efficiency (27). (2) Ink must attach to air bubbles. This is primarily a function of surfactant chemistry. Air bubbles must have sufficient residence time in the cell for ink attachment to occur. (3) There must be minimal trapping of cellulose fibers in the froth layer. This depends on both cell design and surfactant chemistry. (4) The froth layer must be separated from the pulp slurry before too many air bubbles coUapse and return ink particles to the pulp slurry.
