With the Chemical Society s inauguration of its Journal in 1847, English chemists now had a specialized journal of record, which supplemented their previous outlets in the Philosophical Magazine (1798) and the Chemical Gazette (1843), the latter the predecessor of William Crookes s Chemical News (founded 1859). In the case of the Philosophical Magazine and the Chemical Gazette, we have a well-documented illustration of how the history of scientific journals and the history of the formation of disciplinary specialties overlap with business entrepreneurship, in this case, that of the publishing firm of Taylor and Francis.
