Our second interesting case of chirality is an example of advertising trumping science. In this case, the molecule in question is known generically as esomeprazole and is marketed in the United States as Nexium, widely advertised as the purple pill. The story begins with a closely related molecule, omeprazole, marketed as Losec or Prilosec.

The proton pump (H+K+ATPase) of the apical membrane of the parietal cells is the ultimate mechanism that governs acid secretion. Calibration graphs were linear for 0.42—1.68 jug omeprazole the detection limit was 25 ng. In the determination of omeprazole in 20 mg Omeprazit, Omeprol, and Losec capsules, the found amounts were 20.2, 20.3, and 19.8 mg omeprazole, respectively, with corresponding RSD 1.9,1.8, and 1.6% (n = 8). The results agree with those of UV spectrophotometry.

In 1988, after extensive documentation and careful evaluation, omeprazole was registered in Sweden for the treatment of duodenal ulcer and reflux esophagitis, and was launched in Europe as Losec in the same year. The clinical program continued to document the value of omeprazole in further acid-related disorders, though its full therapeutic potential became apparent only during the 1990s, when it superseded the Hrreceptor antagonists in the treatment of all these conditions.
